I'm playing the Rise of Rome as Persians and took two or three Macedonian cities, there were up to 5 or 6 improvements in each city.
The next city I took had no improvements at all. Curious I thought as this wasn't a new frontier city so I reloaded the autosave and took the city again, three improvements. Reloaded the same autosave, took the city, two improvements.
Is it just luck as to what is left in the city? Is it dependent on how many times you attack to take the city? In some cases does the AI sell its improvements when it realises it's going to lose the city?

I don't think that's exactly accurate. The AI would have been low on cash at the same point each reload. it stands to reason that they would have sold off the same improvements.

Unless it's completely random which improvements get sold off. With Preserve Random Seed turned off, it would be different each time.

But if it is random which improvements the city keeps, you could test this by having Preserve Random Seed on....

AFAIK, the rule is: All improvments which give culture are destroyed and each other improvment with a chance of 25%.

EDIT: ...with the exceptions CrackedCrystal pointed out below.Thank you.

I also heard that wonders, aquaducts and hospitals are never destroyed. Basically anything you can't sell.
