I am wondering how you guys maximize the production in your cities with regards to the improvements built. I am currently chopping all the trees except when theres a deer there, and try to get it so i will have just enough irrigation to have about 204 extra food growing when all the squares are worked. The rest are all mines. Then hopefully i will be able to get coal and the bonuses from putting rails in all the squares will have enough food for some specialists.

I used to use forests instead of mines but im pretty sure the mines are better.

What are your mixes of improvements that you use to maximize the production of your cities?

I tend to optimize my cities to ~20 population, but to get there I irrigate a lot after the hospital is built (so it grows quickly). Before hospitals however, I mine my size 12 cities to the point they will have 1 or 2 extra food (for the occasional worker or settler).

Personally I prefer to irrigate bonus food squares so I can have one citizen feed many others, as usually its better min-maxing that way (though not always--it can be quite situational).

Welcome to civfanatics!
