I just upgraded my computer and operating system (Running Vista with a quad core). I reinstalled once and still get this message whenever I run vanilla Civ 4:

Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application.

I have patched up to 1.74. I have followed the instructions on the 2k Games website for this error message. I can run Beyond the Sword, but not basic vanilla Civ 4. ??? Nothing works! Help!

welcome to cfc :band:

are you running the game with admin rights?

Same problem here, Vista refuses to recognize the game disc and I've run it in admin as XP, Vista, NT, and 2000 and without admin in all of those.

So it's definitely not that.

I've been searching for hours trying to figure it out and I can't seem to find a definite answer besides run it as admin.

I've also tried using disc two and three as the startup disc as per the solution on the Civ 4 website and it doesn't work either.

Thanks for the input guys. I realized I changed some of the compatibility settings before I patched. I returned all of the those to normal (after I installed all current patches) and my game now works.

there are numerous reasons for this problem - some of those are not solvable within the rules of this forum.
- cd/dvd drive drivers no compatible with safedisc - rather common in Vista since many drivers are not updated properly - check for new drivers/firmware for your cd drive
- running emulation software / virtual drives - safedisc is programmed to disallow this
- running software that restricts safedisc's access to the drive (mostly antivir software - but malware can do this as well)
- running the wrong compatibility mode
- not running the game with admin rights (in Vista you have to expressly give the program admin rights)

this is what I can come up with right now...
