Inefficient units

Basically you can say that there are some units which you would be mad to build because there is little to no use for it or there are better alternatives. For example a battleship, costs 400 production, has possibly the highest defense value of all units but is of practically no use to me: our battleground is not coastal, and when going on the offense in a coastal battleground a sub has almost the same attack value and is way more cheap than a battleship at only 150 production. The only reason to build battleships is so you would have something for wndy battleground weather.

It really depends on your situation. If you have some strong opponents, focus on units with higher defense. Don't get all one kind of unit (or all that have the same optimal weather condition), as you need flexibility in battle.

My personal all-round favorite unit for fairly early in the game is the knight, but in a defensive situation, a huge phalanx stack is very useful.

Another reason why the Battleship sucks is because it costs 400 production to get 16 attack. But you can get 8 attack with 200 production with cruisers. Now if you have Leonardo's Workshop wonder (+1 attack per unit), then the 2 cruisers both get upgraded +1, while 1 battleship only gets a single +1.

Big units are not necessarily better, small units like Riflemen can be better at the ProductionCost:Attack ratio if you have the appropriate wonder. 60 units (that cost 75 production each) give you a total of +60 strength with the wonder, but 30 units (that cost 150 production each) only gives you +30 strength with the same wonder.

Battleships are useless because whatever tech they need (is it steel?) NEVER gets researched before Electricity, and once you have subs, why would you attack with anything else?

Riflemen are the best unit for a very large portion of the game. Submarines are better on attack but there are nations you can't attack with them. Including the only halfway competitive nation in my newest game.

For similar reasons, horsemen are better than cavalry.
