Install locking computer

Let me start by aplologizing if I am breaking any protocols, or if this is an easily found answer... this is the first time I've ever been to this site. I bought the game (Civ 4 Complete) last week and I can't get it installed. It keeps getting hung on line:

C:\...\Mods\Afterworld\Resource\Civ4\scroll02_btn.tga

It hangs there, locks the computer and I have to power down and safe boot. I am using a Toshiba pslb8u-0jg037. It is only about 6 months old, but I had trouble with a defrag the other day (trying to solve this install). I left it running 8 or 9 hours and it wouldn't finish. I know nothing about computers, if not already evident.

Anyway, if there's anything I can do to solve this (outside of a new computer), I'd really appreciate the help. And apologies again if this was a waste of anyone's time.

After reading the sticky post "how to get help here" I am including my DXDIAG info. Please let me know if I can provide more information to help resolve my problem. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response and welcome, ori. I don't think there is any error message. The game will be going through it's install process with the progress bar and the files flashing on the screen. Then it locks up the computer on that same file name each time.

I've tried to install 3 or 4 times now and always the same thing. I have to power off the computer to get any response. I can't even pull up task manager. It is just completely locked and I have to cut power and reboot.

There are a few errors around the last time I tried to install it. It's hard to narrow down. I'm going to try it once again now and hopefully be back here with some useful information.

Alright, I'm a little out of my element here because as indicated above, my computer knowledge is rudimentary at best.

There are two errors that seem to keep popping up. I'll post what they say.

One is source VSS (whatever that means):

I tried some solutions from the fix it thread.... deleted the professional file in the InstallShield. Renamed the InstallShield file. I'm about to give up and just take the game back tomorrow. Doesn't make sense that a game I bought 5 days ago still still has these issues 5 years after it's release. Never wasted so much time trying to install a game and I'm really frustrated right now.

Thanks again for your time.

sorry to hear that
for what its worth: the two error messages don't seem to be related to the install:
the first is about some backup utility used by windows not working right
the second is about a c++ scripting utility - and the sources of these errors seem to be manifold - it could in theory be caused by the install - but then I'd expect to see an installshield error message and there are too many other potential sources found when googleing (this and this particular error hasn't shown up here in these forums at least) - you might want to consider contacting take2 (even if you decide to return the game - this is not an official forum and its always good if they hear from disappointed customers as well).

Well, the best laid plans....

I tried to take it back this morning to Best Buy and the chick gave me what I think was the runaround about "copyright laws" that prohibit them from doing anything other than exchanging my game for the exact same product. I explained to her that the game won't install on my computer. "Copyright laws....". But it's worthless to me...as worthless as an exchange for the same product would most likely be. "Copyright laws...."

I decided not to prolong the battle by informing her that GameStop somehow finds a loophole in these "copyright laws", because they take returns within 7 days of anything for any reason. Oh well, looks like I'm stuck with the game so I'm going to keep trying to get it installed. I did take the exchange on the very, very slim chance that my original disk was defective. Going to try to install the new one now. Not holding my breath but I'll report back for posterity's sake.

horner. Run the memory test in vista. You might have a bad memory location thats messing up the installation. If the defrag didn't work the other day it might be a hardware fault, not the game.

Thanks for the response Zylornck, but miraculously I got the game to install this time. I don't know for sure if it was the new disk. The only thing I did before installing it again was go into my program files and delete the 2k folder completely. I don't know why it worked this time, but I'm not going to look a gift horse in the mouth, as they say.

Thanks again for the time and responses here. I'm sure I'll be around asking for help in some form or another down the road. This is the first time I've ever played this game and it looks amazing/incredible/limitless. I'm looking forward to many hours of getting lost within it.
