I'm having a problem when I try to install Sid Meier's Civilization IV on my Dell System. My current system is listed below.

- Dell Dimenstion 8250 Series w/Intel Pentium 4 Processor at 2.80GHz
- 1GB PC1066 RDRAM
- 128MB DDR ATI Radeon 9700
- 200GB 7200RPM Segate Hard Drive
- Windows XP with service pack 2 installed
- Turtle Beach Santa Cruz DSP Sound Card

Everytime I try to install the game it starts off by trying to install "Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility Version 4.01.1001", after it completes this it tells me that I need to restart my system to take effect. When I hit the restart key I normally have at least one or two programs that do not want to end, typically they are "LVCOMSX.EXE" and "YBROWSER.EXE". After I finally do restart I rerun the Install CD and it tells me I need to install the "Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility Version 4.01.1001", and the same process happens again.

I have gone to Intel website looking for answers and even tried to install the latest version of the "Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility" but nothing seems to work. I did use Intels ID utility to see if my Chipset was detected and it was, it gave me the following results:

Detected Chipset: 850 Chipset Family
Memory Controller: 82850/82850E
IO Controller: 82801BA (ICH2)

I have tried disabling my norton antivirus software on my system when doing the install and I'm current on all windows patches, I also defrag my system on a regular basis. Please help me get this game installed on my system, I meet and exceed all minimum requirements and I have never had any previous issues installing software on my system.

PLEASE HELP!!!

Interesting - 4.01.1001 was released a few months earlier, YBROWSER>EXE is an old yahoo browser, and LVCOMSX.EXE is an older Logitech webcam exe file. Sounds wacky I know, but maybe .... something on the install CD has triggered off an old failed install routine. If its been formated since bought obviously not, just wierd, as I very much doubt these files would be anywhere near Firaxis, let alone on the CD.

Kind of a negative post, cant offer any solution, sorry, but I very much doubt they are in the CDs. If they are, perfect return reason to get a clean set.

EDIT: more thoughts. That version number was the Unoffical version of the Utility. Again a bit wacky, but its a wierd one this anyway, anyone have access to the PC who could have tried to download/ install some old shareware .. those files got on the disc somehow ...

Are you trying to install Civ 4 by using whatever comes up when the CD autoruns? If so, instead try executing setup.exe directly from the CD. That fixed a similar problem for someone else.

I tried to do the install by going directly into setup but every time I try to start up the game it completely freezes during the loading process. I have to actually cut the power to the computer in order to get the system from stop freezing.

I also checked and it turns out the intel chipset software installation was actually installed on my system by dell. It's on the dell drivers CD that came with the system, last time I reformated my hard drive I had to reinstall it.

I'm not quite understanding this. Are you saying that you have now successfully installed the game, but that your system freezes when the game tries to load (start)? Or does your system freeze when running setup.exe directly from the CD (and so the game hasn't yet been installed)?

I did successfully install the game but now everytime I start the game it freezes while it's loading.

I suggest that you download and install patch 1.52 and see if that helps.

I gave this a try and I still freeze every time I load the game. I think my error still is revolving around my initial Intel Chipset problem.
