I installed Civ 4 original, and everything went fine. When I went to install BTS, it went online to look for a patch, as expected. (I think it would be v. 3.17, the latest as of this Sunday, July 27th.) However, during the installation of the patch, it tells me there's been a fatal error, and the entire installation (patch and BTS) aborts. What gives?

Try downloading the patch yourself and manually doing it.
During the installation it automatically checks and installs any updates. I can,t control that. And because I,m on a network using a shared computer unplugging the internet is not an option. Is there a way to disable the automatic search and install? Or is there a patch to fix this?

is this a cd or a digital version of the game? the cd version should not go online on its own...

This is the CD version...in fact I don't think it goes online...it is just checking for DirectX Runtime components and it says "Patch failed to install. Aborting installation."

what it tries is install the 1.74 patch and the newest directx 9c version - it might help if you do that before it installs bts:
the 1.74 patch is hosted on this site (look on the front page) sometimes that install fails when 1.61 is not installed, you'll get that from
