Installation problems

I've suffered from weird problems with installing patches and uninstalling the game itself. Now the uninstallation program says it only uninstalls version 1.0 and wants me to remove the 1.52 first. Just how... The new 1.61 won't install because of exception number 0x80040303, which also is helpful knowledge. With 1.51 I resolved a similar problem by uninstalling the game manually with regedit. It did work, but come on, it's sick.

What on earth causes this? Is anyone else having similar problems? I doubt that everyone would or it probably would have been fixed. Perhaps windows installer is broken for some obscure reason?

are you sure that's the code!? it refers to a device driver problem with a zoom modem (incompatible driver). the first part of the code could refer to file replication, though. i don't know why you'd need to uninstall anything first, the patch should just go on top of everything else. sorry.

I'm rather sure. I checked while I typed the original message.

The reason why I do uninstall civ before installing the new patch is that exception. I can't get past it and the only way is to uninstall the whole game. That works 100%, which is good. Though the uninstalling is by no means simple, since I have to regedit the civ4 stuff out so the installer won't find the game. ...And like I said earlier, the reason for regedit is that the uninstaller refuses to uninstall anything but version 1.0000000000. It states that quite clearly.

I tried the unistallation with 1.61.... and it went through! Hooray, this is good news. No more regedit. Well, let's start the reinstallation then :) Perhaps it now even will install future patches too, but that remains to be seen. Can't test that right now.

Civ4 is a good game, but damn has it had a few bugs.
