I tried the installation guidelines Stargate provided in his T4T thread, but when I go to start up the mod it turns out a file can't be found. What do I need to to to get the mod installed?

Which file can't be found?

Here;s what I did, and I was at least able to start a game with the mod loaded:

- Downloaded and unzipped the mod bits (version 1.0 A and B, the T4Trmrs v1.1.zip and the v1.1 patch.

- Put the two .biq files from the T4Trmrs file into ~/Documents/Civilization 3 Complete/Scenarios/

- Merged the components in the other files together into a single folder called Test IV Time v1.0 and put it into ~/Documents/Civilization 3 Complete/Scenarios/

Launched Civ3 Complete and selected 'Civ-Content'. Chose 'Test IV Time (Random Map) Modified' and chose the other game parameters, and the game started.

The mod is definitely loaded, as the terrain images are non-standard, city centre produces 3 food, and a warrior costs 15 shields. And multiple civics are listed, but they don't fit into the panel at the bottom right.

I don't know whether it will fail if and when it tries to display the new units - that's the most likely problem.

I keep spacing that. I'll give your recommendation re installation a try and see how it goes.

One thing I've learned to do is to do a search for the needed files, should the only file in the units/unit type directory be an .ini file. If there are more files in another directory, then I make a copy of the folder in question, transfer the copied files over to where they need to be. Most of the time it happens to be units from the Sengoku scenario, though I have found a need for files for other units at times.

Thanks for the assist.

I see. We're back to "two nations divided by a common language" again :hmm:

Sorry I can't help you, then.

Actually, you did. I followed your advice and it worked well.

I have run into a problem with .biq files, for it turns out that Mac text editors won't handle that format. I guess I'll have to see if the code editor CPanel (web site control panel) provides can deal with it.

Moderator Action: Moved from the FAQ thread, in which it was out of context

The file is "17X Test 4 Time JDW (Random Map) 1.2.biq". It will open in TextEdit and Mute Edit, but not as text. Instead I get code I find rather hard to decipher, much less edit. Yes, I have downloaded AlanH's modified TextEdit and used it to have a look at the file. Same result as with standard TextEdit. Does anybody know of a Mac app I could use to edit biq files?

Any convenient hex editor ought to do the trick. This thread shows how tough it will be just to change terrain.

  • It ain't a text file
  • No C3C editor exists for OsX
  • Our choices limited: somehow run windows or ask someone who can to edit for us

biq files are pure binary. Your chances of editing them without a dedicated Civ3 scenario editor are as near zero as it's possible to get. I have *occasionally* succeeded in using HexEdit to change a single parameter when there was no other way to fix a problem in SGOTM saves, but I really don't recommend it as a fun way to spend your time.

PS. I've had a quick look at that file, and I don't see why you need to edit it. It fails when I try to open it because it's looking for the entry 'ICON_BLDG_Buddhism' in PediaIcons.txt. So the problem is in the PediaIcons.txt file, not in the .biq file.

I used the "find out the hard way" argument, you used the "based on my experience" argument. Maybe I should go back to having the thread where I, amongst others, whined to you & Brad Oliver bookmarked for easy linkability. I don't understand why 4 years later "where's the editor?" still comes up.

The file I'd like to edit comes with Joel West's addon to T4T. One which looks for a Test 4 Time folder instead of the Test IV Time folder. To change it so it looks for "Test IV Time" instead is my goal.

WHy not just change the folder name to match what it's looking for? I don't see that as a Mac-specific issue. Those folder names will not look the same in Windows either!

Because then you would have to edit the other biq files included with the original mod so they can find the folder when you want to play them.

Make two copies of the folder, one with each name?

You have a most fortunate habit of simplifying things. I'll try your advice.

Update: And it sort of worked, unfortunately Joel's scenario can't find Conquests Game Data/text/PediaIcon: ICON_BLDG_Market. There is a Conquests Game Data/text/PediaIcon: ICON_BLDG_Marketplace, but no ICON_BLDG_Market. So Joel's scenario is looking for something that does not exist.

I suggest you contact the author for suggestions.
