I discovered a neat little trick as I was about to acquire dearly needed gems. In the left picture below, I wanted to build my town on the hill (instant access to irrigated tile, better defense). The worker is a slave and would need 18 :( turns to connect the gems. However: By first building a colony before founding the town, the colony is transformed into a road. :goodjob:

Tao,

Neat trick, I'll add it to my list of sneaky manoeuvres.

But I don't think Rome will be too keen on it! :)

And I think that's a huge understatement.... ;)

I wish one day I'll have a great idea like this one to share.
Thank you.

If you are not "short" on settlers, you could also found a town on the top the jungle gems. Your investment of a "wasted" settler would of course be higher than just sacrificing a worker (and in this case, the worker was even captured, so no pop/shield loss due to building it). On the other hand, you get automatically the jungle cleared and a rail road on the gem tile.

Of course, in the shown pic, you must first found the gem town, then disband it and build the desired town.

i luv it..i had an sneaky one too....but i forgot.

But i do use this sometimes....capture an enemy worker in enemy Ter. ...make him run to where u want u're enemy (say u are in the hills..move him too the base of the hill) then when they nearly have him...build an Oupost.in there confusion they start attacking u're troops in the hilkls...and will prolly lose

AFAIK (vanilla), you get your resource instantly after ordering any worker (foreign or own) to build a colony, if road etc. connection exists. The worker doesn't really perform a job like improving tiles, bulding colony is more somewhat similar to founding a new town.
So you could start to build resource dependant units in the very same turn.

Level is deity, and AFAIK colonies are always instantaneous.

Colonies, airstrips, outposts, and radar towers are instantaneous, regardless of the level of difficulty or the nationality/industry of the worker.

Who is this? What's your operating number?

It must have been some dumb mod I was playing.

But, when I looked at the picture here, I wondered what was so great about this ploy in this instance. Doesn't that road hook up through the opponents town? I guess you need an ROP for this to be working in the pictured case. Still it's a way to increase the access speed, if so required.

You do not need an ROP for resources to pass through other countries, just need a peace treaty. Now if you happen to be at war with Rome then you would need an alternate route.
