I am trying to step out of my comfort zone a bit in my current game. I am playing as Poland (still very comfy, as I do love playing as them) but on Emperor. Never played on that level before. I read the very helpful post on playing as Poland by tommynt and have based a lot of things on that. My starting location had lots of hills and forests, 1 dye, 1 gold and 2 stone. On a river and inland by 6 tiles or so. I will probably need to use a GG to get the silk on the coast and since that is the only silk I can see right now, I expect to do so. In the process of exploring the map (Large Pangea with civ numbers reduced to 8), I come upon Mt Kilamenjaro and nearby is Siam. Warrior found that one. Scout 1 finds El Dorado a little further than I would like but still close to the capital. Boom 500 gold. Oh how I wish I were Spain. Maybe 10 turns later, I find King Solomon's Mines. I am the first to discover all 3. Did I mention I wish I were Spain? I used the gold to buy a settler and settle near Mt K. I did not want to have the Siamese get that and they surely would have. KSM was too remote and the city-state snagged it anyway. Alas. I did eventually get El Dorado too. My pantheon was the Natural Wonder faith one.. (one with Nature?) I also had very good luck with ruins. However, Korea is a machine on the other side of the continent. Racking up wonders and we all know how good they are with science. Japan and Korea have the pointiest sticks. Germany is my friend yet is rather annoyingly city spamming around me. Money has been my biggest issue. I had to declare on Siam and took their capital after they built the Forbidden Palace. I am not sure I can win, but I am doing better than I thought I would. I was not really able to stick to the original plan...had raging barbs still on and that really has had a huge effect on the game for me. LOTS of barb camps because the area to my SW was where the 2 removed civs would have gone. I had to take honor. I have killed a large number of barbs. I am wondering if I should continue with the space victory goal or not. (thinking to give advice, you would need a savegame or screenshot...which I am not sure how to do. Still wishing I was Spain...
I like your story.... I've had games like that...and playing as Spain as well...
If I find a wonder like LV or KSM, I do all I can to get a settler there....though I try to scout for an optimum site. If it's far away, I try to be on the coast so I don't have to be concerned about roads.
And, yeah, the wonders often appear near city states....so sometimes you have to move fast to get a settler there and, sometimes you can grab the CS's luxury as well.....
I had an interesting start playing as Spain a couple of days ago...I gave up on the game fairly quickly:
1. First to find Uluru at a good coastal location after only a few turns...so I founded Madrid.
2. Then I found KSM...not the the first to find it though, so only 100G....BUT...it was surrounded by three CSs ....and I could not find a way to get it into a city. And as I was scouting around one the city states grabbed it ...Darn!!
3. Then after several more turns I found the Great Barrier Reef...can't remember now if I was first or not...I think I was, but, again, a darn CS was in the way...no way I could get both parts into a city and the location was really crappy anyway....
It seemed like it was going to be a frustrating game....kind of "good news, bad news"....
I thought of maybe capturing the city states in the way but by the time I could do that too much time would have passed and the city states in question weren't particularly great prizes except for the natural wonders...
I find with natural wonders you really want to get to them early. Although the benefits carry through the game and increase your base, the biggest relative benefit is in the early game.....
One wonder I really like is Kilimanjaro....both food and culture...if you found a city there as Spain you can move through the Social Policy tree really fast early in the game...and getting the 'Reef early, you can blitz through the early techs. An early KSM city will get you a lot of the early wonders...though you probably will have some population growth problems if you aren't careful...
[Aside: I fondly remember one game a while ago...again as Spain...I had Lake Victoria in Madrid in a fairly good coastal location and KSM in my second city, not too far away....that combination worked really well.... Quite a few turns later I even found FoY...far way, but a good coastal site with even one luxury I didn't have....I managed to get a settler there but it took a while....]
