This is undocumented feature.

If you see someone invading ur lands with missionaries or even just one and its headed straight for your holy city? Surround the city with your soldiers and denounce the offending party. Then that offending missionary will start taking attrition in your lands.

I killed off a couple of russian missionaries this way without going to war by walling off my holy city with soldiers xD

The hidden feature is that denouncement has no effect whatsoever. It's the attrition that is killing the missionaries, and it's documented. Just don't open borders with them.

Also, I like this because this means that high cultured empire is basically immune from other missionaries, since the culture shield is so thick.

Every missionary has the 'unwelcome evangelist' penalty that decreases their strength by 25% per turn they end in territory where you have no open borders (so not in city states or neutral territory or AI territory where you do have open borders). This is so you cannot use them as a scout.

Great Prophets do not have this promotion.

hmm okay.

My Great Prophet was bombarded when I spread religion to a hostile holy city, by embarking. 77 damage.

Well evidently denouncing cancels embassies. Is it possible that the OP observed that it also cancels open borders? (Probably not, but wanted to see anyways.)

Open borders requires embassies, so denouncing canceling open borders isn't far fetched.

Wait I thought they are hit with attrition when you have no open borders.

Denouncement is required too?

No. I lost a missionary to attrition in Mongol lands when the Mongols (despite having no religion of their own) prevented him getting close to the city for a couple of turns while in their lands. Although they covet my lands, the Mongols have never denounced me.
