I am playing the Giant Earth Map mod.

This is basically what happens.

I've also had this problem when I loaded some mods that came with BTS. Varietas Delectas, Rhyes and Fall, Dawn of Civilizations, and other mods don't have the same effect though.

What could this be?

Do you have BUG Mod or anything else installed in CustomAssets in your Documents (not in Programs) folder? A conflict between something there and the mod you are trying to play can cause this problem. If you do have something in CustomAssets, try renaming CustomAssets as something else: for example "oldCustomAssets". The game will create an empty CustomAssets folder when it starts up. If the mods work properly, then this is the problem. If this does work, look for a file "mod_name.ini" in the mod. If you find one, look for a line with "CustomAssets" in it. If you find one it will be either something to the effect of "CustomAssets = 1" or "NoCustomAssets = 0". It may not be exactly those names but it will be similar. If you find such a line, change the 1 to a 0 or visa versa, depending on what it already is. After that you can delete the empty CustomAssets folder and rename your old CustomAssets back to CustomAssets. If there is no such line, you will have to rename the CustomAssets folder to have its correct name or one that will make it be ignored, as above, depending on whether you are playing the mod or the unmodded game.
