I heard some kids at my school talking about IRC one morning. Apparently it's an instant messenger program (which I knew) but they also said it's like a file-sharing program because it has much faster transfer rates and that there are sites or places or something that you can go to that let you download things basically as a file sharer? Is this possible?
And does anyone know how/where I can do this? Thanks! :)
And as far as I'm aware it's legal since I was told it's file-sharing.

IRC is Internet Relay Chat. You set up "channels" - CFC has one, on the server irc.irc-chat.net called #civfanatics (# is the prefix for all channels).

I know IRC is legal, but I'm not sure the file-sharing part is...(at least for copyrighted stuff)

Some channels give porno passes. I only use it for communication for games

IRC is NOT an "Instant Messanger" program. It's part of the Internet. Some IRC channels do support file sharing, but the one we're one does not. (In fact, if you try it, you might be banned from the server if you ask too many times. We're not the ones who own the IRC server, BTW). An Instant Messager is like MSN IM, YIM (Yahoo), AIM (AOL), and a few others.

I still don't have a clue as to how to work it.

EDIT: The file sharing is definately not legal.

It depends on what you share.

ie: Sending someone a photo of yourself is legal, sending someone a pirated movie is not.

mirc.com has all the info you need to know to get started, just click on the links on the left. :)

No, you can either Register it and have the popup informing you haven't registered it go away, or just click Continue when the popup appears. It's harmless.

When it's expired, wait a couple seconds after the popup pops up... The continue button appears and you can go about with your IRC again.

Or just use hix script or nnscript and you don't have to deal with it at all :P

I use gamesurge, irc-chat, quakenet (though not much anymore) and irc-storm

usually just idle though :P

I still don't understand how it works? So it's not a chat server, then is it a website, or a connection or what? What is a good explanation of it?

You make up a name then you connect to a server. From the server you can connect to a bunch of chat channels where you have an open discussion. You can private message people, and use alot of cool commands. It's Pre-IM
