Just VENTING!!!!

ever since PTW i have not been able to build Iron Works.
I have only built it a few times before this but still i'm feeling left out.

Just for comforting sake, has anyone built this on PTW if so let me know just so i know its possible.

Just about every PTW game that I have played that has lasted to Steam Power has seen at least one spot on the map that can build the Iron Works, not necessarily anywhere near my own productive core, but I've had good luck finding one SOMEwhere. So don't worry, it's possible.

Never built that, too :( . Never saw the right spot.

Same holds for the military branch ... Conquered many worlds using elite cavalry but I never got the **** grand leader. The only one I ever saw was not mine  . Never wrote an epos, never had built the Pentagon.

Youve Never had a GL!
Im so very sorry.
Youre fruit basket and flowers are on the way.
(im not bein sarcastic, i feel bad for you!)

Playing on a smaller map decreases the chances of Iron and Coal being near each other.

As far as the GL thing goes, you have to stack the chances in your favor. Protect your elite troops well, and only have them attack when they have a good chance of winning (eg bombard the enemy down to 1 hp first). Also note that you can only have one GL at a time (I know you're not worried about this now, but it will happen eventually). This means if you have a GL you haven't used yet, attack only with Veteran troops, in the hopes of making more elites. Once the GL is used up, then unleash the elites.

Patience... and LOTS more gaming...:D

Continuing cromagnon's post: And a Elite unit that has already have a Leader can't get a 2nd one (You know which because it got a Star by it's name, and you get to rename it).

ALthough if that unit upgrades and becomes elite again, it can produce a leader, WARNING though, it will still be renamed. (You can rename all units in PTW aswell...)

Thankfully, I have been very fortunate in terms of Iron Works availability, both in Vanilla Civ 3 and in PTW. I generally have the chance to build one at least 50% of the time. Now, as soon as I say this, I'll have a dry spell like you Vancouver... ;) Here's to building an Iron Works soon, buddy! :goodjob:

I had never built the ironworks in vanilla civ3 but in my second PTW game I was suprised to read "our people want to build ironworks..." the city I built it in is now a powerhouse

I have only built the iron works one time. That was in vanilla before PTW was released.

It was also in a very bad spot. I ended up rushing it just so I could build one. From a tactical view, it was a terrible desicion though. Corruption was up the wazzu in that city.

I had a few builds in vanilla Civ3. I don't have PTW. My best one was built near the Forbidden Place.

I've twice had the Iron Works, once was in the city next to my capital. They built TOE in 10 turns.

A GL yeilds the ability to build Heroic Epic, Turn a GL into an Army and then win a battle with it yeilds the Military Academy. Later the Pentagon ability appears to increase the capacity of Armys from 3 to 4 units :)

I once had an IW right at my Forbidden Palace. Now how 'bout that? :D

If you REALLY want the Iron Works, time a massive military buildup to coincide with discovery of Steam Power (ie:Cavalry),
find the closest co-incedence of iron and coal, and beat everyone else away with your big stick.

I like the Iron Works so much that I usually hold of building my FP until steam power so I can have a zero corruption mega industrial complex (197 shields/turn is record so far).

Nurse is coming with my medication now;gotta go.

Resources are seeded depending on the levels of competition and amount of land in your game settings. Playing continents with full cmpetition and *minimum* land mass setting should improve chances of getting iron and coal together. Also wherever iron shows up near hills/jungle, build cities there to maximize land coverage. E.g. with an iron resource in middle of jungle, try to get 3 cities centered around that tile.

I think it comes up for me once every 2-3 games, but I don't go crazy for it. It really needs to be near your core or FP, else you just get a corrupt city that pollutes a lot as well.

I don't build military academy until steam engine is researched, because I want it in the most productive city and most of the times that's the one which has IW.

Btw, I recently had three consecutive games where I could build IW without even founding a new city to do so. ;)

Anyway, my question would be: Would it pay off to abandon a city or two in order to build a new one on the right spot (given that there no wonders in the city)?

Weird; my impression of PTW games played so far is that it's possible to build the IW that much more often  Personally I wouldn't abandon existing cities to build it though; it will cost you a lot of money in forfeited income and science beakers plus you'lll have to build up all the improvements again.
