Irrigating city squares

Can you make any improvements to the city square?

If you can then... *smacks head*.... I am a complete idiot for not doing it :)

Do you get increased production by improving a square before a city is built on it? I always thought city squares had a set amount of production regardless of terrain they are built on... that is why I always try to avoid building on bonus resources... and build on crappy land to increase my production from that square.

I am talking about the square that the city is founded on. There is always a citizen working the main city square.

you don't get any bonuses for building on mined/irrigated terrain

If I'm not mistaken, the square of the city itself always has the highest level of production available. It's automatically considered to be irrigated, so specifically irrigating the square first doesn't do anything.

Terrain enhancements does not affect city squares. Mines and Irrigation is deleted when a city is founded on the square and a road will come in the square(if there isn't one already)
THe square always produces 2 food(3 for agri civs) and 1 shield(+bonus when reaching city size). The only thing affected by the terrain is commerce.

What form of government do you have? Depotism restricts a tile to producing no more than 4 gold/shields/wheat, not counting bonuses.

That is not true. Despotism just makes squares producing more than two of a type producing one less of that type.

So... if I build on bonus resources that only give + to commerce, this will be added to city production... I assume this commerce will be affected regularly by corruption?

I will have to change my strategy to build on commerce bonuses whenever possible to gain immediate benefits from additional commerce in instead of having to wait for city growth.

Cities automatically have roads, so don't bother building them.

Building a city on a bonus only gives a commerce increase? I thought if you built a city on a wheat bonus, you got extra food too?

EDIT: Never mind, I'm an idiot
