I used to go for Alphabet first. Then the other day my militia opened a hut and THREE powerful barbarians came out, and poof - I was gone. (I was playing on Chieftain and was shocked at the strength of the barbs. Somehow I thought barbarians were a little less powerful when you play on
chieftain. )

That said, I have resolved to go for Bronze Working first - thus geting stronger protection from Phalanxes - and then go for Alphabet. (And then perhaps Pottery.)

How soon do you go for Bronze Working? What else do you choose early in the game?

I like to go for The Wheel or Bronze Working. Chariots are a huge strength to have early in the game, and the Colossus is also a definite advantage. Besides those, I tend to like getting Masonry soon--it's good to have the Pyramids.

:king:

My experience tells me that it is best to get Bronze Working as soon as possible. This way you will be prepared to face barbarians or early encounters with other civs. That is why Bronze Working is very often my first choice.

In every game, my first priority is always security. This doesn't mean producing lots of phalanxes or building barracks right away. Possessing the knowledge to produce phalanxes whenever they are needed is enough to increase security.

The Wheel is important if you have neighbours. Until you discover other civs nearby, this technology can wait and you can focus on Pottery, Alphabet, Masonry and Ceremonial Burial.

Bronze working if I am defensive, sometimes I go for the wheel if I am on a continent with other civs and want that continent to myself (so I can ostrich myself in democracy and get high tech and take out the other islands and continents later...).

I get bronze working first so I dont have to waste on building militia, which are useless. Then the wheel. War, war and war. Best way I find.

Always Bronze then Wheel. Then I aim for Democracy (I tend not to build Pyramids) and Religion, then Railroad, then Industrialization. If I know I am on a small island I will shoot for Navigation after the Wheel, then the rest listed above.

not building Pyramids ? why ?

I got ya - ancient conquest of the world with 30 chariots. sorry mate I don't play it - too boring and too predictable for me.

Psst, Form2, wrong thread.

I prefer to begin with two settlers, which means at least two other civilizations are nearby, and at least one of them would give me Bronze Working for "free". Normally I like to start off with Alphabet and launch right into Code of Laws for a quick shot at Monarchy.

Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. Often I get bored having to reserach that one first so I go for The Wheel or Alphabet just to break up the monotany when I'm first starting out.
