Cuturaly who do you think Canadians are more similar to, their neighbor to the south or to the people on the other side of the Atlantic?

Socially they are American
Politically they are European

You assume all europeans are the same. I've more incommon with an Americian than i have say a russian or a german.

A lot of Canadians have more in common with the french than they have with the US. I'd say the rest of the bunch probably have more in common culturally with the US than what they have with their closest conterparts in Europe, which would be England.

I'd say us. But they'd probably claim the opposite. :)

BTW, Palistina doesn't exist, neither does Palistine, and nor does Palestine. :p

Politically they are European, socially...I'll leave that to the Canadian posters here.

Edit: As in closer to Europe, not actually European of course.

They're not American or European, they're Canadian. I'd say they fit into a category all of their own.

More like europe IMO ( i am a quebecer which is in Canada), here a few point which make me think so.

1.- Social programm like free school, free healthcare, social insurance for injury in car accident and at work.

2.- Our penal system is much softer than U.S., i mean nobody go in jail for 20 year because of smoking weed. Rehabilitation through psychological help is the rule for those who need it.

3.- More consumer protection agaisnt fraudulous publicity and/or fraudulous marketing.

4.- we dont have the superpower mentality and dont sponsorise military to other country. US is the biggest weapon saler in the world as a comparaison.

5.- Our election system will never allow what i call the Bush gate.

6.- We care about environement ( more polution restriction law).

7.- We are open mind to other cultur and we are like by almost every country when traveling. Wear a Canadian t-shirt and you are welcome, wear US flag then you may hear; go home yankee, or go home gringos and such alike.

I always kind of wondered what happened to Moammar Qadaffi.

This thread isn't about what you think of America, it's about what Canada is in compraison to the U.S. or Europe.

More like Antarctica

get it? Anatarctica, because it's cold in Canada, and it cold in Antarctica. It's funny because it's dealing with social geography but instead physical, and 'cause Anatarctica has pengiuns!

A mature and well developed idea. I agree with Ryan completely. :goodjob:

Politically, they're too far left to be close to American.

Culturally, they are definetely closer to America. Then again, I have no idea what Europe's continental culture is like...

I think both of these are myths; in some ways, particularly with industrial pollution, the US environmental protection agency is far ahead of us (whereas we are probably ahead in forestry and overall preservation).

And I think that overall, if I had to pick a sliding scale, I'd say it's about 80% American and 20% European. Realistically, remember that politics is not life. Realistically, remember that:

Large parts of Canada are armed - particularly the prairies and northern Ontario/B.C.

Per capita we consume more power and waste more than the Americans, where Europe is far behind.

Per capita, we eat MORE "american" food than Americans in several markets; our McDonald's margins are second to none.
Almost all Canadian TV is American. Not some; almost all.

We drive; Americans drive; Europeans take the train.

Our native film industry is virtually non-existent, and an embarrassment.

Our economies are more highly integrated with the US than Europe's is with itself. Over 90% of the goods and trade that leaves Ontario's borders goes to the US, and Canada's economy is one of the most export-reliant in the world. Or, in other words,

Canada's economy is the most AMERICAN reliant in the world.

America's comedians are all basically Canadian. ;)
