Why do some of the quotes like the Ascent to Transendance quote in the secret project video that is spoken by Dierdre sound like they are spoken through a microphone or makes Dierdre look old?

The first time I played the game (Has it been 9 years already?) I thought so too. However, that's not actually Deidre, It's the planet itself. As you play through the game (regardless of your faction, unless you're playing aliens) you'll ocasionally trigger "book of planet" segments. Some of these will have you (the leader of your faction) being contacted telepathically by a mysterious entity. It is eventually revealed (If you progress far enough) that the planet itself is intelligent at is contacting the human factions due to their ecological disruption.

Most of the time you hear the "old Deidre" voice, It's usually from one of her books, called conversations with planet. This would be Deidre literally recording her conversations with the Planetmind itself, which would be logical considering how the Gaians are the EcoNutters of the game and therefore propably comfortable with an entire ecosystem capable of concious thought.

Hope this clears things up.

That was my assumption too and yep, I just YouTubed the video just to make sure.

That be Planet alright. That's why her grammar is suddenly awful too. (No, she's not just really stoned.)

And, aside from that, they're all old!

but they have longevity treatments to keep them nice and young.

So that means that Dierdre is contacting Chiron (to make it more specific, I used Chiron instead of the popular name of the planet which the factions colonized) using a microphone. I still don't understand the concept. Can you remold your explaination so that a non-SMAC playing person like me could understand? I have never played SMAC.

Near the end of the game, you build a secret project called "The Voice of Planet" through which the planet's sentient fungal neural net can converse with you. The old sounding voice is the voice of the planet speaking through "The Voice of Planet".

Not most of the time. Deirdre communicates with Planet directly; there is even a segment in which she collapses in front of the Planetary Council because Planet contacts her. The voice is Planet, yes, but as it speaks in Deirdre's mind. Not how it speaks using The Voice of Planet. (In fact, Planet is very articulate once The Voice of Planet has been completed.)

The segments from the "book of planet" in which she's off in a trance in council and the segment while getting longevity treatments are the planet talking through her head, but those are very poor english (for example the poem that Planet writes), those are also not narrated in that voice, or at least not in my copy of SMAC. The narrated ones with the old sounding voice are from "Conversations with Planet" ie: "Eternity lies ahead of us, and behind. Have you drunk your fill" from the very end. Those are very articulate as you said, but those old sounding ones are only from the end of the game, and IMO are coming out of "The voice of Planet".

They're not from so late that the Voice of Planet would have been built (examples below). In any case, you're totally ignoring the extremely obvious evidence: That Planet is suddenly articulate in the Book of Planet excerpt from after The Voice of Planet is completed where it wasn't before.

Advanced Ecological Engineering, Secrets of Alpha Centauri, The Pholus Mutagen, (especially) Aerospace Complexes, these all come well before The Voice of Planet is available.

Edit: Found it. Here's the Book of Planet sequence from immediately after The Voice of Planet is finished:

^ "EARTH$NAME5!" The synthetic voice booms suddenly from the annunciator,
lifting you half out of your couch with fright. Voice's "window" in your
mind has remained closed since the inception sequence. Voice must now be
using the new psi link.
^ "Earth$NAME3," Voice continues as the volume is automatically adjusted,
"Your gift is well received, and we thank you. Our prior form, known to you
as Voice, lacked the . . . how shall we put it . . . let us call it bandwidth
to recognize the significance of your species, and nearly made a dreadful mistake.
Fortunately, your magnificent gift bootstrapped us to the Second Tier
in time to postpone the final metamorphosis.
^ "Since we have now mastered your human modes of thought, we shall
adopt your name for our home. You may henceforth refer to us as Planet."
^ "Our growth stage has been suspended, but cannot be put off indefinitely.
Come, children, there is much to be done if you are to join us in the flowering."
