Is it all about the 3rd city?

The way Civ6 is shaping up, it feels like your strategy for 3rd city is the main decision on the path of your Civ.

Everyone with start with a settler and will eventually hammer out a settler.

From there, it feels like how you plan out your third city decides the foundation of your civ's image.

THE CLASSIC THIRD
Basically your third city is just another city. You treat it like any other. There is no civilization based focus. You set up mine, farms, and districts as any other, using terrain bonuses as available. This is the tactic of civs with few to no bonuses before Medieval Era or do not need an early set up to use their uniques. The game starts later for you.

THE DEVELOPED THIRD
Your third city is planned before you start the game. You have a civilization or leader UA or UI that is early and very very powerful. You will be be trying to triple up on whatever your civ's early UA or UI.

THE SPIRITUAL THIRD
The same as the DEVELOPED THIRD except with religion. You see a landscape ripe for a powerful local religion and a Pantheon. Riskier but viable for religious civs or mid/late game civs that get lucky.

THE CONQUERED THIRD (OR FOURTH)
Since there is no early warmongering penalty, a Civ could go for early war. A Civ with an early army UI or UA could possibly build an early army with their first 2 cities, kill nearby barbarians, then take out a city state or another civ's third city before they get up walls or an encampment.

Anyone one else see the 3rd city as the first turning point for a game of Civ 6?

I don't get the reason. If I'm going to play religion and my first city don't provide any bonuses to religion, I'll surely build second city near mountains or Natural Wonder (if any).

why isnt the 2nd city important? I dont get it?

Because you can't realistically conquer another civ or a city state with just your capital. You need at least 2 cities to produce enough strong units to take someone out

Also you'd need at least 2 cities already to really use unique ability or unique buildings/district/improvement.

Therefore you can't really specialize your entire civ until after your 2nd city is founded and built up a bit. Brazil needs those 2 rainforest cities and Japan needs their 2 cities with districts before they hard commit Aztecs, Scythians, and Germans will need 2 cities to churn out units before they can conquer unwalled cities.

In Civ 5, early wars were not easy and full of risk. Also securing city locations was often too much of a topic priority to focus your civ that early.

Civ 6 seems to be giving players major empire choice really early.

We have been told by the devs a small empire (the CIV V 3-4 formula equivalent) will be between 6-8 cities, there will be more settling and more early warfare in 6. I do not think the third city will be anything special that will require particular strategies.

Its usaly youre second city that determine youre strategy

settle close to neighbour prepare for conquest of neighbour..

settle on good location with lots of growth or good distirct placements peacefull play early game and prevent wars but growth and development..

Specific location that gives you more faith for a religion. (next to mountain but low resources)..

What is so special about the third city or the second city. If one city deserves the title it is the first city because that city found your whole civilization;)

This sums up how I feel the second city usually determines my strategy. :goodjob:

but your usually just setting at the most attractive place you can find near where you start, more thought goes into the following citys placement.
