Is it possible to change default Barbarian units from Conscripts to Veterans?

That would be great. I have already removed the ridiculous attack bonus against Barbarians.

The only way that I know to do that, and I have played around with modifying the Barbarians a lot, is to do one of two things.

One is go to the Editor and change the hitpoints of the Conscript setting to the same as Veteran, however, that will mean that ALL of the Conscript units will have that increased setting, which is not what I think that you are looking for.

The other way is to have specific Barbarian Units, used only by the Barbarians, and give them the increased hit points. That way you do not boost the combat value of all of the Conscript Units. That is how I do it. I have not added any additional units, but what I have done is use the Gallic Swordsman and the Cossack for the Barbarian Units, along with the Privateer. I do not have the Celts or the Russians in any of my games to avoid problems, as the boosted Privateer is a bid enough headache when the AI civilizations use it.

If you do not want to go that way, the check out the Creation and Customization Forum for ideas for Barbarian Unit. However, boosting the Barbarians is going to have a considerable affect on the AI as well as you, so you might want to try this out gradually, especially if you have eliminated the attack bonus against Barbarians.

For further discussion of this, as it does involve modifying the game I would recommend the Creation and Customization Forum.

I have simply copied the coresponding units into new "barbarian" units with a bonus hitpoint and then designated them as barbarian units in the General Settings of the Editor.

As I am still using its original animation and picture entry (the Civilopedia Entry), it was not necessary to change anything outside the Editor. ;)

The attack bonus versus barbarian is in my eyes not so ridiculous. As barbarians usually are highly undisciplined, they are less effective than a disciplined and trained military unit (see the Boudicca revolt against the Romans).

EDIT: I would rather know a way to rename Barbarians into Bandits or so.

That works if you are using a Windows-based computer, but does not work on a Mac OS computer, at least not for me. I will give it a try again however

I would agree about the attack bonus, I just reduce it a bit to make them more challenging. With my boosted Barbarian units, I use the Gallic SWordsman/Cossack/Privateer, I still loose units and the AI really takes in on the chin.

As for renaming your Barbarians to Bandits or something else, go to Civilizations in the Editor, and go to the Barbarian Civilization. There is a menu with names of various groups there under the Cities menu. Barbarians is the last entry so change that to Bandits or whatever you want. You have to have exactly 76 entries in that menu, so you cannot add or delete groups, all you can do is change the name. I do that to customize my maps to the area that it covers.

If the barbarians were so undisciplined and incompetent, then how did they overthrow the top-of-the-world Roman empire?

Hi Giantlittledog,

what exactly is a Barbarian? From the sight of most civilisations it means most other civilisations are barbarian. ;)

I see the barbarians in Civ3 more as little Bandit Kingdoms. And I missed the good old times from Civ1 then they were actually able to conquer a careless guarded city.

And most of the damage to the Roman Empire was done by Romans themself due to corruption, inner conflicts and other selfcreated trouble. They actually withdraw their troops from most occupied countries themself because of their inner struggles (see again the british Islands). The great "barbarian" invasions started only then the Roman Empire (and its army) were allready in shambles.

Hi Timerover,

thanks, I found my solution in the editor.

The former barbarians have kept their tribes names, but the overall designation has been changed to Bandit Chiefdoms. Now their units are the Bandit, Bandit Horseman and Pirate Galley. ;)

How is it that the Barbarians use galleys, yet in the editor I can't find a galley being assigned to them?
