Is it possible to play Civ 5 on a private server? or do I have to play civ through steam. So pretty much, what i want to do is replace steam with a server. Thnx for any help.

Civ5 is a Steamworks game and requires Steam to launch. There's no getting around Steam.

Any way possible to host a game with 10 ppl? Is it just the host rig?

You have to play on steam/lan/(hotseat) if you play legal.
Private servers or play by ip requires you to be a programmer and change the code.
this does have legal repercussions.

It is too bad. Steam is a prerequisite to civilization v. If you don't like it than you can geeeeettttt out!

You can always sign into steam in off line mode change the avatar name ie add a 1 to your name. Then on anther PC change the name in off line mode as well, doing this will allow you to play a LAN game with two or more PC's. Don't know of a way to play multiplayer online without steam
