Is it safe to employ mods?

I think I've unlocked all but three achievements. I still need the one for purchasing 1000 tiles (only got 200), the one for getting beaten to wonders ten times (5/10) and the one for downloading a mod.

I've never used mods in the past. I remember reading some kind of warning about it disabling all achievements and doing some kind of irreparable harm to your game. Is there a safe way to do it and then restore it to original settings somehow so you still get credit for in-game achievements?

Mods do disable achievements, but they will not damage your game. In fact, mods can enrich your game experience, such as by changing annoying user interface glitches (er, I mean features) or adding new game elements. Firaxis has recently published a couple of how-to videos about BE modding.

Browse the Creation & Customization forum here at CFCS or the Steam Workshop (you will need to download one mod from the Steam Workshop to get that acheivement) and you will see a great variety of mods.

A small clarification: downloading mods do not disable achivements, activating them do.

These are overstatements. In general mods don't disable achievements but prevent gaining any achievement in that gameplay for which you have mods enabled - in other words:
- you enabled any mod, you play = you gain no achievements even while the reqirements are met for one
- you have mods disabled = you gain achievements as normal

As for harm - if you enable a mod, play with it, and you save - then if you uninstall the mod that save (and only that save) won't load anymore as it depends on missing content. That's all about it.

And btw for CivV I've gained only three achievements ever: Build a Wonder, Download a Mod, Play a game with a mod ;D
