So Sid Meier's Railroads is available on Impulse now, and I was wondering if it is worth getting it?

I've never played any of the other Railroad Tycoon games (I've only played Civ III and Civ IV)... I also never played the original Colonization, but did like Civ4Col. I have XP, not Vista- it apparently doesn't work on Vista.

Thanks in advance.

(Relatively) Short Answer:
Whilst not a bad game, I do not think it is what most people expected. It is not part of the Railroad Tycoon series. It is more of an entry-level, quick-play game than an in-depth simulation. If you want a quick, simple and challenging buzz then you may enjoy it.

Personally, as a hardcore gamer, I wish I would have checked out Railroad Tycoon III instead (and some of the community here seem to think Railroad Tycoon II was superior to III). I would suggest checking out the demo (apparently there is one, somewhere) before you buy.

Also, pay attention to the minimum requirements - the game will not run at all if you do not meet them (literally - there is code in the game that will prevent the game from running if your computer does not meet the minimum spec).

Finally, whilst multiplayer may sound fun, the last comment I heard on that subject was that there are rarely people online to play with...

Since you are using Windows XP, you shouldn't have the problems with Railroads! that I did running it under Windows Vista.

As Zild mentioned, Railroads! is not part of the Railroad Tycoon series. If you like model trains, then you would probably like Railroads!.

I confess, I am one of the community here who thinks Railroad Tycoon II is superior to Railroad Tycoon III...except for the fact you can't build tunnels. But it's all a matter of personal perspective and there are many members of this community who prefer RRT3 to RRT2.

Railroads! is selling for cheap now. As I posted in another thread, if you live in the U.S. you can purchase the retail boxed version of Railroads! for $7.90 from GoGamer.

Try the demo if you prefer. You can download it from the Sid Meier's Railroads - Official Site. (You can also download Railroad Tycoon Deluxe free from the same site.)

Whatever you do, have fun. Good luck!

It's been a month, but then again this is a reasonably-inactive forum.

I decided to (after being busy with other stuff) DL the demo (from the website link, thanks Greybriar). I kind of like it. The game seems fun-ish- I have to learn how to play it first. But I think I might get it.

I run Windows XP and experience the crashing problems.
