Just read your whole post, at the startup screen, choose 'PC sounds' NOT Soundblaster or No sound.

It should now work fine. Just the music might get on your nerves.

Or then choose worse graphics and SB and then wait until there are catapults, it'll go faster

I have windows ME

It should go faster after your first successful combat.

With Catapult, Cannon, Musketeer, etc. units for me

ahhh never mind ill just play civ net :)

Im using a free DOS emulator on my machine at the moment (Windows ME) called DOSbox. It's not bad, and you can have SoundBlaster sounds on as well, although the music is not emulated terribly well, it does the job. Search for it with Google.
