A good game ? Yes. Not the best game ever, nor the game you have to sell your shirt for, but definitely a game in which you have a great freedom, and at least 30 hours of play time. Maybe more if the genre really appeals to you, but it is the minimum time to have a rather complete look at the game in a normal difficulty (truly, try not to start at the first difficulty, it almost made me wanna quit after something like 10 hours).

Yes, it is a great game.
Maybe it's not as addictive as Civ, but other than that, everything about it is awesome.

Aye, its great entertainment for afew weeks. I got bored of it after a while though, its too repetetive.

It's not chess and it's not civ, but it was fun. I mean, it was really really fun but I lost interest much quicker than with civ because the possibilities for developments seem limited to me. You can't score higher than 126 (well, a little higher if you use that multi-Mendoza exploit, but still) and I really can't be bothered to "make the whole world Dutch" or something like that, although I would be impressed if someone does it.

It's very disappointing, IMHO, and feels very much like the badly programmed retread of a ten year old game that it is.

I did persevere with it for a while, and really wanted to like the game, but... it becomes awfully predictable and mundane awfully early.

Probably the worst PC game I've bought in the last year.

A bit OT here, but not worth starting a new thread over:
I expect to be getting the game tomorrow.
I have to ask: is the game easy on beginners? Are the out-of-ship controls easy to pick up? I haven't actually played any 3rd-person adventure games on my PC yet.
Also, to those who know:
how technically demading is the game compared to, say, Rome: Total War?

I really enjoyed the game but it didn't have the lasting power of Civ.

Corsair, the controls are very easy, almost everything is done with the num pad.

Ye won't regret getting it, its a superb game. :D

For beginners, it is said that it takes around 30 minutes to get it, which is not much.
Compared to RTW, I'm not exactly sure though.
What's your system's specs?

I think I prefer Cutthroats. But Pirates is still very good.

Pirates, sorta, reminded me of DungeonSiege... it's great fun for those first two weeks, but then the entertainment value dwindles off -- noticeably. It's fairly easy to "do it all" in a short amount of time. YMMV, of course.

Personally, I wish it was a lot more "strategic".
