is the release date region-specific?

If so, WHY? I pre-ordered the game, downloaded it, but steam won't allow me to start it. Now I can't even play vanilla version anymore. I'm currently in Asia.

Release date is region-specific, yes. I'm surprised you were able to download it though, I would have thought that if it could be downloaded then you could play it. I preordered mine from a third party so I'm still waiting on a key to arrive, so I can't verify if what you're experiencing is normal unfortunately.

Edit: Why is a complicated question to answer, but it seems to involve import/export laws, customs and large non-digital retailers still effectively dictating how things work. At least, those are the normal answers I've seen to that type of question.

Thanks. it's very frustrating though. I ordered it on steam and seems like I already downloaded it. It's just when i try to start, it gets stuck and now i can't even play the plain version.

Is there a list where i can check out when it will be release in Asia?

I believe it was 19th in North America, and 23rd elsewhere.

Are you sure you haven't just downloaded the recent patch that damaged the game for a few people? Apparently there are ways around that posted on here somewhere.

My steam was downloading a 1gb update this morning and I am in the UK. I assumed this was the update.

Being unable to launch vanilla for several days will be very annoying since I was trying to get back into things before the release.

Well, this is strange because a friend just bought the game on Greenmangaming and he's playing right now while we're in France

I bought it on steam and I can't play by the way :(

Interesting, I got mine from greenman also.

/me crosses fingers for when he gets home

That's odd. It says on Steam that it's not available here until the 22nd and I've double checked my greenmangaming account and email - nothing.

It plays for me and I'm in Australia.
Bought my key from green man gaming at US prices (since I didn't feel like paying an extra $20 "Australia tax" on steam), so I don't know if that makes any difference.

Awesome news :)

Half tempted to abandon the gym tonight to get home sooner and eek out an extra 45 mins of gametime

I know everyone has internet now but i still find this whole concept of having to have active internet connection to play the game kind of ridiculous. If I bought the game i should be able to play it however i want. And what's up with steam anyway? If you look at any pirate site the expansion is cracked and ready to be downloaded and played, a bit ironic, isn't it, it's paying customers who got burden by all these nonsense.

Well, to be fair you only need an active internet connection to play the game once, upon installation. After that you can keep it offline. Unless you want patches or DLC.

Quite right though that paying customers tend to be the ones that suffer.

To be honest, I'm honestly rather confused now as to what is meant to be happening. I thought that everywhere but the US was restricted from playing until the 22nd. This is the first I've seen where people are able to play it before then. I assume you're not using a VPN or something to get around Steam's region identification process?

VPN won't work, I tried that. I tried EVERYTHING. Just won't allow me to play. I guess I can wait till 23rd, but if there is still a problem i'd be REALLY pissed.

22nd, else right.

Unfortunately it looks like they've sent the signal to turn it into a 'pre-load'. At least, when I went to download it on my desktop it was noted as 'pre-loading' and not updating like on my laptop.

I think the question of the original poster deserves an answer. In the digital age, using a digital platform like Steam, and with a worldwide audience who all paid the same price (sometimes international users pay more), why have two different release dates? I'd think it was about bandwidth, but it seems we can download the game from overseas now, you just can't play it for three days. I don't understand why. Is it just a holdover from the days when it took a few days to ship cds around the world?

Well my G&K does work early without using any VPN or workarounds. I assume it is just to do with store I got it from.

Either way I have just left it running rather than risk a reload :)

The different release dates are total nonsense, just ship it earlier if it becomes a problem. I remember when Gears of War 2 came out: worldwide a release date. Not that its unique, but what surprised me back in 2008 is that I found the game available a week before the official launch in stores. At the stores they explained it had to do with how strict the company handles such release dates. Apparently, other developers can do it. So why can't it be done for G&K? I enjoy reading the stories on the forum, but I just can't think of a valid reason why the rest of the world would wait longer. Especially in these times.
