Is the Statue of Zeus too powerful?

This may be hard to believe but I have games where the AC just line up and die. I once sent 13 of them to attack a city and had 3 left at the end of the first attack run.

Now most of these fights were against (what started as) R spears so it is not a fair test. We all know that R spears can easily defeat tanks. :spear:

:lol::lol::lol:

Aaarrgh! What horrible sacriledge did you commit against the RNG Gods? You didn't even get compensation with retreats! I admit, the RNG Gods usually are pretty nice to me so my experiences don't always apply.

I get horrible retreat luck.

Were you attacking other fast units? The chance of retreat doesn't work against other fast units, including the Impi and Gallic Swordsman. I admit I usually get pretty good retreat luck attacking slow units.

Sorry, I know this isn't the balance you want, your bad luck offset by my good luck.:mischief:

No, I know that. I have been playing this game for 5 years now. :)

The Civ RNG Gods practice a peculiar form of balance. Be nice to have the basic game code released so modders can kill that aspect of the game.

I've been having ... weird luck lately. On average, it's been taking two Tanks (or Panzers) to kill another Tank if they're in Jungle. In fact, any Industrial unit in a Jungle has better-than-even chances of winning against a Tank. Also, my Panzer Armies like to get Red HP quite often, particularly against unFortified Infantry in the open.

You were lucky your tanks fought against modern AI units and not ancient ones.;)

Well, they're doing fine against the Zulu Pikes and Impi on their arid little island (which has Mountains, as well), it's just fighting in the Jungles which seems to really weird out the RNG.

Just wait until they attack a normal rSpear standing on grassland, it will be the downfall of the Panzer core. :spear:

Well, by the time I get to the Incas I'll be using Modern Armor, so I should be good ... right? Please? I don't think I've ever gone up against Spears with MA ... :scared:

I would disagree. It's a great bonus if you use it right. you have to find ivory right when the game starts though, and then get math ASAP, and then have a city you can use to make your statue, rather then anything else you probably need at that stage of the game. If you don't manage it like that...you get 5-10 free AC, which wont make much of a dent at that point in the game. Won't make the game though, might help wipe out a nearby civ at best

I think I have only lost one MA to a spear, out of probably 30 battles, but I usually don't redline them, so you should be fine. :D

If it's just the ancient cav unit that blows it for you, then the game editor is your friend. I think the jump from horseman to knight is too extreme, so I routinely pre-edit games to allow any civ to build ancient cavs after they get construction. It's one unit the AIs actually know how to use just cause they can wander around and cause chaos.

statue of zeus is useful, but not overpowered

it basically determines your game play. if you have it, you might as well use those ancient cavalry.

i do fine with it, and i do just fine without it.

if you do build it, then at least have the foresight to build it in a town with a barracks.

I hate it.
A 3.2.2 unit? Ancient age?
Against me, the AI i'm sure changes the build times. How, by the modern age, can you have 150+ of them without losing your entire army due to upkeep and obsolescence? Then beat tanks with them!?!?

The Gallic Sword has those stats, with one less hit point.

I don't think it is possible for the AI to get reduced build times on wonder that give units every x turns. You could never acquire 150+ in a 540 turn game. Are you sure you are reporting your numbers accurately?

Also, note that the higher the level the more free unit support the AI gets, so they can easily support a much larger army than you can. And any unit can potentially beat any other unit, just a matter of statistics. If you are an obsessive reload scummer, you could potentially win the game with warriors.

In an unmodified game, the SoZ will expire with Metallurgy. Unless they never learned that tech, they will do well to get 20 AC. You get one every 5 turns. I could kill 150 AC in the moderna age with no strain at all, they would just be dead weight for leader fishing.

The level of support is a function of the level of the difficulty and the form of gov and the size of the empire. If you have 150 cities, it is not a problem to have that many units as they would cost you nothing in maint.

No, I was exaggerating for effect... I'm not sure how many that the AI can actually get.
I usually edit the game to 999 turns, so I can take as long as I like after actually winning.
Even if they are an easy threat to deal with, I still find the use of them so annoying:mad:!

Yes there are dangerous in the AA and part of the Middle Ages and in an army for much of the game. I love them.

The number of turns wouldhaveno effect on how many AC you could get, unless you never researched Metallurgy.
