Is there any point in building wonders?

i can go through the whole game without building one most of them are absolutely useless. i don't even think there is one that gives you free tech unlike in civ5 i always used to make a bee-line for these.

Hardly pointless. It's a tech web, not a tree and so you can beeline it even more efficiently if you really want it ;)

Yep. Field Theory for Quantum Computers is only 4 techs from the start. The longest beeline in the game is only 5 techs. So nothing is really that "late" unless you are going a different direction.

If you go Communications ... which can be a good idea because of the +1 Agent from Command Center quest, Feedsite Hubs, and it's the gate to Orbital Networks for Lasercom for the Contact Victory ... you can often make a case to go Field Theory because of the Free Tech from Quantum Computer. +2 Energy, +10% Energy is a pretty nice building.

Works best if you take Field Theory with another free Tech. Elodie or waiting on the Institute quest (which isn't hard since the Institute itself is horrible) ... probably not a good idea for Kozlov to wait that long or go that direction early enough.

While it is easier to reach certain wonders, you still pay a hefty opportunity cost to do so. I think the worst problem is that many wonders are placed in dead-end techs that offer little else, some of which don't even give any affinity points. There is little reason to ever get, lets say, the Mass Driver, the New Terran Myth or the Archimedes Lever - they just delay your victory and could have uses the turns of research to get an affinity tech instead.

As for the "what else to build" question: Agricultural development is really, really powerful.
