If you can help I would really appreciate it, I have SMAC and a readme file describes SMAC v4 and others but I can't play hotseat mode. I assume it is an updated version but am I correct in this assumption?

What can I do to make hotseat viable?

Vista is the OS.

And yes, we're still around.

You should be able to play a hotseat game. What happens when, after starting the game, from the main menu you select Multiplayer --> Hotseat/Play-by-Email --> New Multiplayer Game, and so on? Do you get a specific error message? Can you start a single player game?

If you're still on version 4, you may want to apply the Win 2k/XP update, which may be found here. Doing so will upgrade you to version 5. That shouldn't have any effect on running hotseat, but the patch does fix other problems. But keep in mind that if you're going to play multiplayer, everyone has to use the same version of the game.

Thankyou Mr Petek for your response it's good to see there is a ghost in the machine hovering around to advise noobs like me with stoooopid questions.

I managed to solve by installing v4 then windows compatability update then changing the ini.
