So you think that popups are a good thing? One could argue that the popup killers kill advertising revenue. We have a defender of popups? 
I'm only ensuring my sanity of surf the internet by not being bombarded with a ton of popups.

I don't have Oprea. I use Popup Stopper to block IE popups.
Yes it's allowed. Why shouldn't it be? The people running that site need a way to maxmize their profits as they are basically providing a free forum and website for you to browse. In order to maximize their profits they'll need to do anything possible to get you to see those popups and ads, even if it includes making you disable your popup stopper.
Basically the answer I have, that no one wants to ever hear is this: If you don't like it, don't browse there

why cant they just use banner adds

Pop-ups are the way through which certain ventures choose to sustain themselves or make profit. How do you define "good"?
If it is profitable to the users of pop-ups, it is a good thing to them. However, if it keeps away customers, it is a bad thing to the ventures. It is a discomfort to the web surfers, however it is not a bad thing since it rarely intends to "harm" you (I am talking about legal pop ups, not endless loops).
The legality of pop ups remains questioned, but so far the law supports the position of the ventures using them. It is ethical to use them according to the law of the country you live in.
Therefor, increasing your comfort by disabling pop-ups is, universally, the un-ethical thing to do, not vice versa. Therfor, sites who annoy you for disabling their pop-ups are in NO WAY unethical. Actually their claim is perfectly legitimate: One of the conditions to visiting our website is suffering our popups. We are those incharge of the content, therefor it is perfectly legitimate for us to make you see them for using/reading our content. By removing the pop-ups, you change the content and it's advertising appendixes, hurting our chosen financial oppurtunities, therefor making it legitimate for us to display this annoying message.
If you get an apocalyptic attack due to sudden pop-up advertising, you might have a case. So far the only thing I hear from you is "Discomfort", and considering it is the website and content of the owners of the website, who choose to use pop ups, your case holds no water in the ethical or legal reality.
By the way, I use a pop up killer.

I use the Opera pop-up stopper, and it works fine. However, I agree with IceBlaZe. It's the same thing with TV, commercial breaks are annoying, but for the channel to give you the range of shows and movies they do, they have to get money some way. If people started to record all the things they wanted to see and watch them the day after and FF through commercials, the resullt would be higher fees for watching their channel, because they have to make money some way.
It's the same with internet I think, if everybody stop all the banners and popups from showing on the pages they visit - the result will be that the sites will charge you for visiting them to get money in some way, or that the ISP's will have to pay for their users to be able to visit a site. The point is that you and everyone else will have to pay more for surfing the net.
It's not necessarily a bad thing though, a lot of people visit the net daily and so far we're only paying for the hardware, and not the content, and an ad free net might make this time more pleasant.

Well when all is said and done, pop ups are viruses. They are trying to spawn a new process on *your* system with out permission. Allowing this type of activity to occur is against any sort of secure computing practices or common sense.

Still, they can't do anymore, harm the computer anymore, than a normal homepage can.
So, if the browser's secure, the popups should be too.

However, if you think it's fine for a web site to start new processes on *your* system that's fine by me, but each process robs overall performance from a system, if nothing else. I don't let it happen on my system and won't let sites force that on me either.
