Is this an exploit?

Hello.

I'm wondering wether I behave as a lowly cheater when I finely tune my trades with the CPs.
Let's take an exemple.
I've just discovered the Republic and thanks to the Great Lighthouse my galleys have just established contact with all the other civs.
I want to trade my techs and get the most profit from them. So, I'll contact all the civs one first time, not trading anything, just to check who has what and how much money each one has. I'll write down the info carefully!
Then I'll start twisting my brains until I find the best way to maximize profits and exchanges.
By doing this carefully, you can often rack up every tech any CP possesses, and about all the money they own, just trading one or two good techs.
For instance, the Egyptians, who are completely isolated, are the only ones to have Monarchy; however, they have little else. I'll give them writing, literature and whatever they demand for it. I'll even give them the Republic if needed, because I know they won't be able to trade it to the others until they discover Astronomy! Then I'll sell monarchy to all the others, in exchange for currency and construction (thus propelling me into the Second Age) and whatever gold they may have. Right know, the advisor says "we are backward people", but in one turn and with just a few clicks I'll emerge as the most advanced and the richest civ.
Do you think this is an exploit?

Yeah, the AIs trade among themselves very often, and they give each other better deals than they give you. Playing the middleman in tech trades like you describe is just how the human stays competitive. The AI does similar things, though it doesn't really do them intentionally. If you notice, AIs with more contacts tend to be more advance and richer than isolated ones since they can buy and resell techs.

I think that's the way 97% of us play so no it's not an exploit..

You know what I've always wondered about somthing being an exploit. Before I go to war with someone I'll always bring up the trade screen to see what they have to give me when the war ends. Sometimes they have nothing but alot of times if they are smaller than me and they have like 100 gold in the bank, I'll demand that gold knowing they will give it too me and then I'll declare war on them anyway.. is that an exploit?

I think that hurts your rep.. But I am not sure. I know it did in Civ2.... So it would seem likely they carried that feature over. The idea in civ2 was they bought your friendship for atleast 20turns.

As for the middleman tech training.... it isn't an exploit since it is actually logicall trading IMO. I think most people do those same things. But if you noticed something like Civs will trade their tech for workers and you can trade those same workers away in the same turn thus receiving something for nothing... Well now that would be an exploit. (course that doesn't work ;) )

I wish the domestic advisor would warn you when you are about to do something that could hurt your rep..

But sire! Doing so would force the barbarian galley to block our trade route with the Hittites!
