I've searched the forum and read several threads but after all I thought that having my own wouldn't be so bad.

So yesterday I played Tokugawa/continents/monarch. Obviously lost. Now I want to give it another try.

So at my disposal was a big continent with pretty good terrain. One half of the continent (where I started) was covered with a lot of forest, grassland and some rivers with floodplains and another half was pretty much desert.

Resources:
1. lots of silk (like 7-8 tiles)
2. 1 gems (on the desert side of the continent)
3. some copper and iron
4. 1 deer, some cows, pigs, horses
5. some seafood
no marble or stone

I think I could have had maybe 10 or more good cities. And I had them but probably just didn't manage them properly.

In the game by the time I met AIs I found myself far behind in development and when I had optics/paper/philosophy somebody already got Liberalism.

So I have 2 main questions:
1. Strategy. How to develop? Cities, city builds, techs, wonders, anything?
2. How to handle the barbs? In the game I tried to fogbust everything as soon as possible but now I'm thinking that maybe it slowed my development.

On large Iso starts you want to try, and zone control fog bust with warriors. Every time you settle a new city, and gain more vision push your warriors out some to gain more. With good enough placement barbs shouldn't be a problem on Monarch.

Tech wise you probably are going to want to try, and chop out The Oracle if your capital has enough forests. The best tech to take IMO would be CoL to run 4+ scientists to be able to get a bunch of GS to bulb your way to Lib. Then you can Lib Astro if you want or Nationalism. By then if you have a 15+ city empire you shouldn't lose.

Of course, Toku's traits are wasted during isolation. Two luxury resources is not great, so I would try to get a religion (eg Oracle CoL) and then optics as fast as possible to get contact for tech trade. If you can build about 10 cities on your home continent you should be powerful enough to expand/war after astronomy
