Hello all, it's a shame my first post on these great forums has to be in such a negative light but I'm pulling my hair out here with trying to get Civ3 Vanilla working.

I'm waiting for my new computer to arrive and to give me something to play until I have a system that'll run Civ4 (although with my luck it won't run on Vista or something and I'll be stuck) I decided I'd pick Civ3 Vanilla up at my local Walmart for $10.

I bring it home and install it which runs smooth as silk until I actually try to run the game. It'll begin to boot up and I'll briefly hear something coming through my speakers that sounds like an opening video or some such thing and then POOF, I get nothing. The screen remains black, the disc stops spinning and I need to Ctrl+Alt+Delete or bring up the Start menu to exit the program. Hitting the Esc key does nothing.

I decided to install the latest patch and still get nothing. Played with my monitor settings and get nothing. Tomorrow I'll likely try installing the latest drivers for my card and see if that works. My specs are all above the needed level, I'm running on XP SP2 and have no problems running stuff like Alpha Centauri, Civ2, Starcraft, etc.

Any ideas? :confused:

Might be a refresh issue. Try forcing the refresh rate. Go to your Civ3 folder, and find the civilizationiii.ini file. It probably doesn't exist, if you haven't started a game. Go to the same folder as your Civilizatoiniii.exe file, and just create the file in notepad. Put in the following lines:

PlayIntro=0
Refresh=XX

Where XX = your refresh rate. The PlayIntro=0 will disable the introduction and take you straight to the menu.
