Issues with Plug and Play on WinXP/nVidia/Athlon XP?

I have the slow scrolling problem and as it turns out, if I turn off the Plug and Play service, the scrolling is fine. So I know that's the culprit. But there's 2 problems:

1. Plug and Play is a rather important service, and I'd rather not disable it each time I want to play the game.
2. My sound card uses Plug and Play, so I get no sound with the game. I have the latest drivers installed, but I guess somehow it still uses PnP.

I run WinXP on an Athlon XP, nVidia GeForce 2 Ti, SB Audigy machine.

Has anyone else come to a similar problem with Plug and Play and resolved it? I have been working with Firaxis to fix the issue, but it's been a while since I've heard from them.

Thanks.

I have the same problem.

Only difference is I have a Geforce 4 MX440 Card in my system.

I can hear the audio from the game, but get no picture...

It is then pure guesswork to get the combo to reset the pc cleanly.

I have a Multiscan 20SE which when I run CIV3 the Powersaving light comes on too...

This worked for me. I had the slow scroll problem but this fixed it. Follow these steps. First, install the drivers that came with the videocard. Reboot. Next, install this program which can be found at www.speedy3d.com/tweaking/#nvfix. Reinstall civ3. Reboot. Install latest patch 1.17 I think. Reboot. It should work for those with GeForce 2 and 3 cards. There is no need to turn off plug and play. Also, use the monitor driver that goes with your monitor if available. Let me know if this works. I spent days trying different things till this worked. Finally I am off to conquer the world. :D

P.S. This should work for you too Hokie since we are both using the same Gigabyte motherboard and GeForce video card.

Natrunner,

Thanks for the info, but it did not resolve the issue. Even after 1.21 patch, this thing still sucks molasses.

I've never heard of any other software having so many FUNDAMENTAL issues for such a large installation base. It's one thing when little features seem buggy, but when a lot of people can't even play it, Civ3 qualifies as the biggest piece of garbage ever produced. I will not argue this.

Firaxis better give me my money back.
