Yes, my friends, I've got at least two more III games in my blood, and I'll track both in this thread:
  • I never did actually beat Sid.
  • I always wanted to do a huge Deity milk run.

Mapfinder will start rolling...as soon as I figure out my desired settings. I've vetted hundreds of III submissions since I last played, but actually choosing game settings is something I'm rather rusty on.

Sounds like my goals :P

I was thinking of the Deity milkrun as well. I actually started but got sidetracked and didn't return to it. I will try it out at some point but I'm struggling to find any time at the moment. Maybe this will spur me on.

A huge, Sid, milkrun sounds like absolute hell, to me anyway. I find huge maps and milking to be too tedius for my taste, but both together.....I can only wish you luck...(and hope you don't die of boredom ;) )

I've been thinking about a Large Deity milkrun. About half the tedium of a Huge Deity milkrun, and good enough for at least 30,000 points. So far my only Histographic is a Tiny Regent, for 2164 points. Pitiful, but enough to get on the Quartermaster list, and 30,000 is good enough to get into the top third.

Two possible early strategies: (1) 50-turn research for a while, and get techs by trading, or (2) full-out research. I've seen games in the HOF each way. Comments?

My comments are that I see no tedium in milk runs :)

This to me is a no-brainer, I'm most likely going with SirPleb's Sid run settings.

  • I never did actually beat Sid.
This one I'm not entirely sure how to set up in Mapfinder. I mainly want just a win on Sid, I'm not particular to mapsize or even Civ. My preferences are really to aim for 20k, and one of my opponents must be the Mongols (go figure).

Anyone have suggestions?

Try to keep the mapsize down. Each map size multiplies the game time by enormous amounts on Sid. Just getting to 1 AD on a Huge Sid map can take 30 to 40 hours for me.

20k relies on a lot of luck and Mapfinder runs.

However, if you want a Sid win, go for 20k using dromons. If you get the right map, it really isn't that much harder than playing on Emperor or Demigod.

Hey, you have two days to do a small sid map for the gauntlet.. er.. never mind. ;)

I did a 20K on small sid. it wasn't that hard - the key was the dromons, to beat the AI down, and having crappy land. Dromons rule the seas until frigates come along, and even then, the AI doesn't use it's units well.

And yes, the Mongols were one of my opponents ;)

Main problems will come from getting coal if it's on an AI controlled island - if it's their homeland, it's a huge problem. if it's an outlier, it's not so bad.

Oh, and making it through the restarts if there is an AI on your island, or if they beat you to collosus, even though you started on it right away, or if they beat you to the GLib, or if they start near you and land 8 archers on your island by 1500 BC!!

Good luck, slug! I look forward to seeing what the results will be.

I don't think I'll ever beat Sid, and huge diety sounds too tough for me.

If you can do a 20K, you can beat Sid with it. You can actually win a 20K on Sid without a lot of battles - you just need patience. And a start with 5 or 6 luxes on it!!

With the dromons, you can pin the AI to their shores and cut down there research ability. I actually have a better date than the one I submitted, though I had reloaded it a couple of times - I had wanted to know what was possible.

I've been trying a couple of Sid games lately, and have decided that I am no where near good enough to beat it. And at least the Mongols didnt win.

I actually think a tiny sid 20k is marginally harder than a small/standard sid 20k. Just because the AIs research quicker on tiny, whereas your initial research is likely the same 50 turns regardless of size. Slightly bigger map means more contacts, more chance of being able to productively play middleman. I like mongols and zulu as two of the opponents, as a tiny arch means the EXP trait is fairly useless for them. I think my 'idiot's guide to 20k thread has advice relevant to sid, I'd play as whichever SCI civ you feel the urge for. Byzantines are useful for their Dromons, and because they start with alphabet. Start your build with curragh->colossus, start your research with a minimum run at writing, and cross your fingers.

I think I agree on the small vs. tiny. The Glib is very important for 20K, and if you only have 2 opponents, you run into a problem if one of them is much stronger than the other.

I think I went 80% water, cold and arid. It helped that I think I had the only fresh water on the planet, plus 5 luxes.

Agree on 'pelago as the map of choice. There have been some good write ups in the Stories and Tales forum. See the links in Tomoyo's legendary games thread for more info. 'Theodora's AWS Adventure' (or something like that) is one that comes to mind.

One of the recent gauntlets was Tiny Sid SS. I tried that on continents and had one to myself. That was OK.:)

It may not by Sid, but I definitely need a 20k now....sheesh.

Perhaps you'll allow me to suggest Standard Warlord. It probably won't give you a #1 slot, as Moonsinger holds this with a date of 1265, but there's only 3 other people that have entered for this catagory. It shouldn't take you too long either and I don't want to distract you from your main civIII aims!
