I'd enjoy being in my comp corner
Yesterday, after hours of playing a to begin with successful emperor-game that would have yielded me a civ-percentage of ca 350 % I gave up. I erased that game from my computer and I won't install it again.

Firstly: All of a sudden I started getting horrendous amounts of polution - even though I did not produce any. Is this the so called "polution bug"? Is it preventable?

Second: For the umptieth time the game crashed as my SS reached AC. I can't save as I have too little "basic memory" on the lap top I play Civ 1 on.

So now I've had enough. Furthermore it's a highly addictive game. Almost worse than Civ 2. And I couldn't read to my exams because that evil computer just sat there on the table waiting for me to return to my doom.

Has anyone had similar experiences? Addiction, frustration, apathy?

Yes.

No, unfortunately.

I think that's the problem of your laptop, though the game requires very little.

Almost? ;) For me it's much more addictive! Even though it seems less fun.

Yes, yes, no. This game has brought the most emotion of all games I've played. Both frustration and joy. But indeed it is very addictive and I'm a lucky guy that I had Civ2 before I needed to do serious homework at school. ;)

8000 kb or something like that. And when the computer starts up Windows swallows a tenth of that:( And if I'd know anything about computers and if it was my computer:D I'd try and do something about that, but as it is I can't do anything about it.

I don't know. As it is I play Civ 1 when I'm at my SO's and have nothing else to do... or when I should be studying... And in my own flat I have a "more modern" computer on which I play newer games, I haven't tested Civ 1 there, but it's true Civ 2 hasn't made it equally hard for me to concentrate on homework as Civ 1 has.

Mm, I can relate to that. I just started playing Civ 1 again, and it's much mure fun as I understand it better now than when I was a kid, but I get extremely nostalgic because the graphics for instance bring back such nice memories of good old times when games had to be good and not necessarily visual masterpieces. I don't deny that I like the graphics in Civ 3, but I think they were good enough in SMAC and the fact that Civ 3 is more graphics than gameplay (the turns take too long on a huge map with 15 Civs) is quite sad. I'm hoping that C3C will bring something more to that game when I lay my hands on it.

But till then, and after my exam which is tomorrow, I'm afraid Civ 1 will return on my computer. I haven't tried playing OCCs or 5CCs on Civ 1 yet;)

I just had to let out some steem. But it feels so wrong when your about to make your highest score ever and then the game crashes on you:(

It's strange, I've never had the pollution bug nor has the game ever crashed. And I've mostly played the game on a 486 25Mhz. The most frustration I've had because of the game is when my battleship lost to a militia or something like that. And the barbs gave me headaches sometimes. I don't find the game more addictive than Civ 2, but it's still the second most addictive game I know. It must be very addictive, since I'm still playing it while the game is more than 12 years old!

I also never had the pollution bug, but that's because I never did whatever triggers it. I believe it's when you get Future Tech 255.

Hm, I have to try that:) I made it 1,5 days without Civ 1, I've gone longer without only when I haven't had an opportunity to play... I like playing when I drink my morning coffee and listen to the news.

I suppose I just have to retire before reaching AC. I can then add 200 points to my scores in my head:D But yes, I'm waiting to stumble on Civ 1 by mistake in some store with used games...

The game might be more stable if I play it in real dos instead of the fake one, but in that case I have a question, if somebody can help me with them.

How do you zoom into a city without a mouse (mine doesn't work in dos)

Oh and another one. Is there any way of contacting the AI civs without a diplomat or do just have to wait for them to contact me?

:thanx:

If you don't have a diplomat you can't contact the AI. Then you have to wait for them to contact you, but you can increase the probability for them to contact you. If you capture one of their cities for example, they get really scared and usually contact you pretty soon to offer you peace. They might demand indemnities though.
