I think the barbs are a good feature of the game. They are optional and their strength varies with the difficulty level and other setup options. They force you to build up defenses in the early part of the game before the other civs become much of an issue. Once the land is settled, you rarely see them if at all. They not only hinder your advancement but also that of your rivals.
