You don´t have to do it privately, the SPAM bots are programmed to search for xyz@alpha.com type phrases on the web, if you type it like xyz at alpha dot com you´ll be fine.

I would expect that the programmers of spam bots have found that out meanwhile, and programmed their bots to search for this format as well...
