Japan -- Weakest civ in civ3???

Japan is indeed great, but two golden ages is not possible in Civ3.

I thought you could get more than one, as you get one for unique unit victories and more for having certain types of wonders. I could be wrong, though.

In my games they were mediocre at best. And like all other AI players they don't attack often during the Middle Ages. Once they attacked my Tanks with their Samurais. They are pretty aggressive and don't like to trade.

I think the Zulu get the biggest shaft in the game. Militaristic and Expansionist, both attributes which are shady anyways. They don't get a technology gain, so they stay behind in military, and no commerce gain hurts the size of your army. I'm playing a game now with them, and the supposed bonuses from militaristic have amounted to nothing! I have yet to produce a leader in the game, even though I've had wars with just about every other tribe, and I've only had a 100 year span where I wasn't at war with someone in the entire game! My elite units (especially cavalry) have killed many enemies, but the game won't give me a break! And the expansionist quality is worthless on an archapeligo world, as there are practically no goodie huts. It'd be nice if expansionists could have faster boats or something. And militaristic civs should have an army boost, like an extra free unit for every town/city/metro.

In my games they are always weak, too. In my current game they have one city left. And I was their friend.
Other weaks: India, Rome, China
Strong: Persia, Egypt, France
Advanced: England

I don't know how the AI plays them but for the human vs the AI Japan is clearly the best civ.

I've seen Japan very strong - I shared a medium-sized island with Japan, and in Middle Ages Japan declared war on me. I was wiped out by waves of Samurai.

But in my current game Japan's the weakest civ. I played as French, and share a large island (accounts for 60% of land on the whole map) with Japan, Germany, Greece and India (what a crowdy island!).

I dominated the north and central sections of the island. I found Japan very early, and at that time, Japan has only 1 city (Kyoto). I expanded quickly, and found Germany to the south, and Greece to southeast. I stopped expanding then... as I already had serious corruption. I just filled in the gaps after that.

There were enough room for Japan to expand, but it didn't. I don't know why. It was not trapped in very bad terrain... it got some jungles, a few flood plains and desert, some forest and hills, plus a river. Can't remember clearly about resources, but it had horse and iron. Before I went into Middle Ages, Japan expanded to 3 cities (while other AI civs had about 10). It didn't even send workers out to build roads! It's captial remains unconnected to its other cities.

Then I found India... who was connected to the island by a 4 square-wide land bridge to my southwest and west of Germany. It is much stronger than the other 3 civs. India challenged me by move its settlers and pikemen into my borders again and again. So I waged war against Gandhi - but not directly. I didn't want India's cities... they're too far away, and my civ was already too large. So I bribed Germany, Greece and Japan into war with India, with a small price of some dead-end tech (and the Wonders were already built by me).

India fought back. Germany defended itself well, and Greece was out of Gandhi's reach. Poor Japan. One of its city was razed, and Kyoto captured. So I quickly sent out some Cavalries to Japan's aid. I recaptured Kyoto and handed it over to Japan.

The war soon ended as civil disorder went out of control in India. But after that Japan never recovered - it rebuilt the razed city, but that's all. It still didn't send out workers to build roads, and its captial remains unconnected - so to this day (16xxAD) I still cannot trade resources to Japan.

I don't know what Japan's AI is thinking.

You get that in practically every game, though: one really puny Civ that has a terrible AI, and then you get another that expands quickly, manages it's civ well, etc. You basically get a whole range of AIs.

Japs can definitely kick some ass. I started a campaign against them last night with cannon and cavalry, I took four cities but found it impossible to defend them with musketmen since the Japs would send dozens of samurai and immortals. I ended up losing the cities, retaking them and then razing them to the ground.

The civ that is the weakest for me are the Russians.

That's funny, for me Rome has always been the toughest, either Rome or the Americans. It's normally either the Romans or the Americans that are the toughest computer for me.

Rome is so weak. I've wiped them out every time I have played against them. Even in my very first game.

Can Japan be strong?

OF COURSE THEY CAN!!!

How strong a civ is doesn't always depend on the civ they actually are (so its impossible to say a specific civ is the strongest, or a specific civ is the weakest)

How strong a civ becomes depends on how productive the lands are around their starting location and how much land they manage to acquire before clashing borders with someone else. The kind of science they acquire is, again dependent on how much territory they acquire (and therefore how much commmerce they have) or by how many goody-huts they find which contain technology (OK, I concede that expansionists have the advantage in THAT area). The kind of military they have depends on technology and how many cities they have (sure some civs bump military to the top of their priorities list, but that alone doesn't make them stronger). Don't forget that you need the economy to support it. And huge military power can only be achievable by huge empires (unless you keep science level at 0%)

I haven't a savegame enough conclusive but seems that here is a bug - I get 2 Golden Age in a strange manner anyway !!

I play with Egyptians - get a GL and build Pyramids => Golden Age ...
In 15 or 16 turns after this a win a first battle using WarChariots and as a result my Golden Age had a duration of 35 or 36 turns even that my advisor doesn't say anything about this !!

I was sure about this looking at number of turns / techs !!

Trust me - sounds incredible but it happens to me !!

Regards

In my games it's always the Romans and the Zulu who have a terrible AI. In every game I played, the Russians are extremely agressive and expansionist and are always the pride of the world when it comes to science and technology. That is, next to me.:)

Man those Japanese aren't that pathetic after all...
