JEELEN's Scenarios & Maps

Well, I played until...I believe it was...sometime in the 1300s. One either Price or Monarch, newest version. I'm not rally sure, cause my Civ4 go SNAFUed recently, and I had to uninstall it and junk. Anyway, We got up to...Rifles, I think. Either that or Muskets. In a more detailed version, I had a mutual agreement with Byzantium. We both decided to fight France. I, being closer, took advantage of my position before Byzantium could get their forces in place. I took Northern France, and got them to Capitulate, after a bloody seige of Paris, and a counter attack that almost took it back.

Byzantium didn't like the idea of me gaining mroe ground then them, so they decided to double-cross me. Since they had taken Italy in a bloody war about 50 years before hand, they sent troops right into my heartland, which I left lightly defneded, having taken a lot of troops that denfed my cities to war. So, The Byzantines swpet through Germany, until Berlin. I had gotten my army to Berlin, and was prepared to attack. However, I overlooked the two Great Generals that the Byzantines had, and was soundly defeated. With no Army, I was forced to pull whatever forces I had back to France, and try to ferry my troops across the English Channel, were I'd hopefully be able to acquire a city or two from the weak English. However, I failed, and after a heroic last stand, much like Constantine XI, the Byzantines defeated me, having controll of the majority of Europe.

The reason I asked about the senarios is that I have an idea, motivated by a book I read recently. It's an Alternate History/Science Ficton book dealing with a no Muslim world(Muhhammad converted to Christianity on a trading trip to Syria, later joined a monestary, and composed great hymns, eventually becoming the Cardnial of New Carthage, and a saint), and how the Byzantine Empire(They call themselves Roman, as we all know they did), flurished, and was ale to reconquer Hispania, Southern France from the Franks, and Italy.

Thus, their only rival is really Persia, and China. The Franks are powerful also, but not too. The Anglo-Saxon England, since there was no Norman Conquest, is a sometimes ally of Byzantium. I was wondering if that would spark your intrest.

I'm not really into 'alternate history' (unless you count sci-fi/fantasy - like FfH, wonderful mod); I try to create scenarios with a more or less historical start position. But you can post your idea as a Scenario Request on the dedicated thread.;)

As for your game story: I already gathered from kochman that the bi-yearly turns aren'd doing anything for the advance rate (that being too fast in comparison), so I'll need to look into that. Anyway, fun story that - I hope you had fun being crushed by Byzantium!

I personally tried a few civs (France, Italian Normans mostly) to see if Crusading and liberating the Holy Land was possible (and not too easy), but haven't had the time to play The Crusades! all the way through, so thanks again for reporting your experience so far.:)

My pleasure, and I'll get right on that senario request. I have an odd fascination with the Byzantines, for reasons even I do not know. One of the reasons I posted about Justinan's reconquest in teh senario request thread. On an Enlarged Europe map, my mouth waters already. I've actually tried my hand at it, but mine is not the skilled hand, or the potentially talented one either.

Regarding your Holy Land question, I do believe that Byzantium, France, and Spain managed to capture the Holy Land with a large combined army. However, the counter attacks that followed drove them back until Byzantium ultimatly ran them down, regaining its lost land.

I just took a break from 1066 AD as who else? The Byzantines. Pretty intresting, I should say. I spent the begining turns building up my forces, and losing cities, until Constantinople was at seige. However, I was able to, luckily, beat them back a little, and concentrate on my main goal: taking Italy. It wasn't easy, but I managed it. With the survivng forces I had (and there weren't many), I sent them to creat a defensive wall around Constantinople.

That's it so far, I suppose. I'm hoping to retake the Middle East and North Africa, but I'm nott oo sure I'll be able to.

Well, from not playing Byzantium I've learned that in the long run they're a reasonable choice - I've often seen them found colonies, just like the Western European civs (and India, China...) overseas; Constantinople is a solid power-base, well worth to hold on to, plus they start with several ancient Wonders, giving them a cultural boost.

Exactly. I think, for my next game (I rarely have the patience to complete a game fully) I'll play the French, and go for uniting Europe under one banner. Or perhaps I'll try 300 B.C. Any suggestions?

France basically has the same potential as Byzantium (Paris lacks Constantinople's culture, but can get productive very rapidly. England and both China and the Mongols are challenging as well, I think; China will need to keep the Mongols at bay, whereas Ghenghis needs to live up to his reputation (which is not as easy as one might think - which is why I gave him a bit of a cheat start). But as concerns 300 BC, the obvious challenge there is ofcourse building the Roman empire virtually from scratch. Apart from that, most of them might be interesting to play because of the divisions (Alexander's successors, China) or simply their starting position on the map.*

*Checking the setup for 300 BC I just noticed the Parthians were listed twice, so I've corrected that.

Thanks for the tip, Jeelen. I played 300 BC for about 3 hours or so, and have some results. So far, as Rome, I've conquered Gaul, upper Hispania, and the Balkains. I'm working on Macedonia and Greece, as well as Greece's colonies. Selcudia, Ptolemaic Egypt, and Carthage are going to be difficult.

I'm taking a break, playing Earth 1942 AD WW2, Lokkus's senario, as the Russians. It helps me relax, I suppose. Varietas Delectat helps too, seeing as I hate the same generic models for every civ.

That sounds like a neat result (depending on what year you're in). I guess if you're a warmonger type of player, Rome is the way to go with 300 BC - historically Rome was virtually continuous at war.

Lokolus was an inspiration! I did a couple of CIV Gold versions for several of his creations (for CIV Gold 4.0). And Varietas Delectat is ofcourse a great graphical addition. I hope you have fun with Earth 1942 AD as well.;)

I would like Byzantines playable and viking too...

Suggested new civs :

Proto-Turks in Central Asia, Abbasids of Bagdad, Fatimids of Egypt, Beyliks of Tunis/Algiers/Casablanca/Rabat...

I actually tried to include the Turks, but they didn't show up on the civ choice screen. But I may add an all-playable version.
