quote from Channel 4 news:

"If you grew up during the last forty years and like music the chances are you grew up learning about it with John Peel. So I have no doubt that the news he has died after a heart attack in Peru will provoke a deep sadness across several generations…..from psychedelia, to punk, to quintessential middle Britain via Radio 4's Home Truths. Musicians, DJ's and fans have been queuing up to describe his impact on music and broadcasting. We will be trying to do him justice tonight. For my own part, if ever a day of national mourning was justified, surely it was so for John Peel."

RIP.

I heard about this earlier today. From his own description of his life, it sounded like a very good one.

Never heard of him. Anyone care to give a discription of his works?

He was a long-standing DJ on Radio 1 - the BBC's popular music station. He survived many culls of Radio 1 presenters, and has always been seen as the friend of the new music scene.

Was he old? Anyway he definitely had a significant influence in the popularity of certain bands in Britain as well as the U.S.

As so often happens when some "great man" dies, I'd never previously heard of him.

The fault lies entirely with you, John Peel was a great man doing much to promote the best in British music.

I will miss him on "Home Truths" and will remember his amiable personality and good taste in music. On the bright side he had an ace life and one hell of a good job :yeah:

My sympathies to his family for their great loss :(

He made a massive contribution to the British music scene by playing what ever he thought was good, even if no one else did. No top 40, no corperate playlist. If only there were more like him.

Ditto me, I'm afraid.

When the BBC did their list of "100 Greatest Briton's" a couple of years back, he was one of the very few living subjects to feature in it.

He wasn't just a DJ. He was Britain's Alan Lomax as well.
