Some teenagers need a lesson in manners and how to troll in style, dont they?

No I dont believe so, I was just commenting on how you always come across in any of your posts (well maybe not all of them, but most).

Is anybody here old enough here to have actually lived through the 60's?
Many of you seem to be seeing John Lennon through rose tinted glasses.
He was a popular musician. He had left-wing political views. He was anti-war.
So what! That doesn't make him some kind of saint. He took drugs, slept
around a lot, made lots of money, had fun and stuck his finger up to authority.
He took himself far too seriously and so are you.
And have a nice day.:)
I guess I qualify. I saw the Beatles live in DC in 1965 and lived through the 60s. I even remember the very first time I heard a Beatles song on the radio. Sure John expressed his political views, took drugs, slept with the girls who threw themselves at him, made money off his talent, had fun, and thumbed his nose at authority. What do you think everyone else was doing from 1966 to 1973? Part of the reason he is revered today is because he did those things and spoke for folks who did not have the podium he had. What else do you want to know?:)

He was a peace activist. Is that why he is revered?

Still, Lennon was a musician.
If he were a guy actually slogging it on the ground, or a politician giving up fame and money for action ( what a society we are in; where the words of tossers like Bono count for more that people like Mandela), I'd have a lot more respect for him.

“Jesus was alright but his disciples were thick and ordinary. It’s them twisting it that ruins it for me” John Lennon

Only by those who hold peace as a high prioity. Mostly, his status comes from his untimely and senseless death. The sense people have that had he lived longer his contributions would have been even greater. Those who grew up in those raucous times put rock stars on pedastles. Usually the stars find ways to get off or be removed. JL died before he could get off. The same "rules" apply to Bobby Kennedy, JFK, MLK, Janis Joplin etc. The myths live on. What JL would have wanted is irrelevant. His death not only signified a loss of talent to the music scene, it also meant that the Beatles would never reunite. That made people sad.

It would be disrespectful for me to quote the saying I usually do when John Lennon comes up.

I'll leave it at this: It is a shame that he died.

He also said that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus. What's your point?

Disrrespectful to whom? PM me if you don't post it. :)

A little reality.

“I used to be cruel to my women, and physically – any woman. I was a hitter. I couldn’t express myself and I hit. I fought men and I hit women. That’s why I am always on about peace, you see. It is the most violent people who go for love and peace.” John Lennon

If he hadn't had eaten lead, I would have loved to see Lennon's modern reaction to rip-offs like Oasis...!

He was a person just like you. It is easy to "select" evidence for why people should be thought ill of. Should go quote for quote and see whose list is better? Shold we assume everything JL said about himself is true? Is everything you've said about yourself true? If you put all the words and actions of JL out on the table, how would he look? Who is the best judge of his worth to western music culture?

Clearly, you hve an ax to grind over this legacy. Did you ever meet him? Yoko? Any of the Beatles? Why do you want to deny him a valued legacy among his fans? Do you know him better than I do? Should we not value what MLK did because he was a womanizer? How about JFK? There are no perfect people, but that doesn't mean they cannot make important contributions to others.

To John Lennon. I might as well post it: "John Lennon wasn't a revolutionary, he was a ******* idiot".
Great quote. Who said it?

I have no axe to grind, and the Beatles were my idols. But I have grown up.
John Lennon has no 'legacy'. He was a great musician/composer and a peace activist, that's it. Why make him out to be more than he was? Enjoy his music and remember him, warts and all.

Loved the guy, but worried about those disciples.

I am. Some of my earliest recollections are of my older female cousins going crazy over the latest Beatles record. :crazyeye: Anyone within earshot of a radio in the 1960s would sooner or later hear (and recognize) a Beatles song. Of course, being 6 at the time, I didn't understand why they were singing, "She was a gay stripper." Sounded kinda racy to me. Years later I learned they were singing "day tripper". And being a kid, that Yellow Submarine movie they did seemed pretty cool, mixing cartoons with music.

In the 70s, when I was more into Elton John, I had a girlfriend who was absolutely ape over the Beatles, 7 years after they broke up. Capitol records re-released their song, Got To Get You Into My Life. I guess I got interested in the roots of rock and roll because of that, plus the fact that Elvis died in 1977 as well. :(

In 1980, when John Lennon was shot, I learned of it while watching Monday Night Football. Howard Cosell announced it. It didn't seem possible! Later, when some of us were sitting around the barracks (I was in the Air Force in Louisiana at the time), we all agreed that a legend had passed. Except one of the black guys; he said that John Lennon meant nothing to black people...

:hatsoff:

I'm sorry you had to grow up. ;) Better luck next time.

Well we all shine on
