So I have to say that I was pleased with the first AAR Josef and I did while it lasted. There was a lot of fun in watching the same country go into different directions. So now we decidied that we both have time to try this again.

For a second country we decided (neither one of us wanted to decide, but I eventually forced Josef to) to play Byzantium. Start as a weak, hopless 1-province minor and see where we can go with it. We are playing with AGCEEP so there are fantasy events for Byzantium (mostly bad) that extend past its historical lifespan. That is, however, only useful if we manage to survive that long.

I am truely amazed at how well Kan's HOI2 AAR is going and I would love to see a similar result for this AAR. I want to get as many people involved in this as possible, and so please, go ahead and offer suggestions, and I promise that I will let people in the thread make decisions in my game.

And now, without further waiting, I will go and begin playing the first installment of the AAR. If you want to suggest something for the start, now is the time to do it.

Oooh! Byzantine, most excellent. :D

I'll be joining up with this, be nice to be an advisor rather than the leader. I'll give it a wee while before deciding on what to advise, I've never played Byzantine, so am not sure what to expect. :)

A Glimpse of Glory Long Gone

"Mother,

I cannot tell you how worried and proud at the same time I am about serving our Emperor, Manuel II. You have taught me well and my knowledge of history fills me with pride for the glory that our Empire once held, but this same knowledge makes it so painfully clear to me the decline into which our country has fallen. Our Emperor is Emperor only on word, and rules no more than a single city that has long lost its former greatnes. Our army is no match for the brutal Turks who command all lands around us and bully our Emperor as if he was their errand-boy. And more, I do not see any way that we could fix it. But I will do as you have always told me - believe in God and in our Emperor, and all things will take care of themselves.

Officer of the Byzantine Army,

Nicholas Basilides"

"Mother,

Do not trouble yourself with Nicholas' letters, they are nothing more than the ramblings of an excited youth who had just entered the service of our great country. He is young, and as he did not have a father growing up, there is much that he yet does not know and will have to discover for himself. He dreams of greatness for himself, and I hope that he does find it, but with greatness comes responsibility and, all too often, grave consequences. I doubt that we should be worried though, as I expect him to serve out his term diligently and become one of the thousands of namless officers that have served the Empire over the years.

As for the troubling situation he paints in the army, I have to assure you that Manuel II is doing all he can to secure the safety of each and every one of us. His first daughter has married the ruler of Morea, solidifying our alliance with them, and assuring us that our two countries will stand together against any foe. A similar proposal has been sent to Theodoras, and we expect them to agree. Indeed, we have friends all around us, and the skilled diplomacy of Manuel II is going to secure the safety of our country.

Always your loving son,

Victor Basilides"

Nicholas!

I must be frank with you. I do not want you to write to your mother anymore. At least not to write to her anything of importance. She is old and ill, and your letters are doing nothing to help her. I am well aware, just like you are now, that the situation of our Empire is grave, and that we are all living in a time when ordinary men are asked to do extraordinary things, but our dear old mother does not have to know that.

As for your inquieries about the diplomatic situation of the Empire, I am most surprised that you are interrested at all. Most officers spend their time drinking and partying with the company of their soldiers, and do not care for the political life of our country. But I digress. Theodoros and Trebizond have both agreed to show their good will towards our Empire by arranging marriages between some of the lower members of the respective royal families. It is hardly anything to brag about, but we can use all the help we can get.

As far as the military goes, I am not exactly sure, but I have heard whispers of a gradual reform in our army aimed at making it more efficient. You will probably know many more details than me, since you will be putting it into practice. I will keep you informed of anything that I happen to know, but remember, I am only one of many who work to help Manuel II, and I do not know everything.

Please remember what I asked - think of our mother.

Your brother,

Victor Basilides."

[Here is the first installment of the AAR. I would like some comments on the format. It takes a lot more time and effort than just a recount of what happened during the game, but if you guys like it I will keep writing in this format. The rest for now will come as a regular report.]

In 1421, with the advice given to him by Victor, Manuel II released Mustafa, Murad II's uncle, who was improssoned by the Byzantines a long time ago. This led to a crisis of succession in the Ottoman Empire and for a few years Mustafa's forces fought vigorouosly against those of Murad. In the end, however, Mustafa failed to secure enough support, and was defeated by Murad.

This led to the complicated diplomatic exchange in 1424 between the Ottomans and the Byzantines. On one hand, the Byzantines have clearly betrayed the Ottomans, but formaly they remained Ottoman vassals. When the Ottomans demanding further restrictions on the Byzantines, Manuel II rejected them and prepared for a war. Konstantinos XI was put in charge of the Byzantine army, ready to fight the Ottomans. But the Turks backed down and allowed the Byzantines to remain.

The army, however, was put to good use. Konstantions pressed Manuel for a war against Gihazi that could lead to the regaining of the port of Izmir. Manuel granted the wish and in mid 1424 Konstantinos led his troops to Izmir. He easily defeated the defenders there and besiged the city. Following about a year of skirmishes and sieges the city fell to Konstantine, who moved on to Antalya, hoping to secure the victory.

At this point, however, the treacherous Gihazi sceded Izmir to the Ottomans, who were more than happy to step on the toes of the Byzantines who have caused them trouble. Konstantinos was furious, but in no shape to fight the Ottomans for the city. He hastly signed peace with the small turkish tribes and returned home. It was now 1427, the Ottomans were growing stronger while the Byzantines remained weak, all their efforts at expansion in vain. Ioannes VIII rose to the throne that year, and it was yet unclear if he would be able to do anything better than Manuel.

I was going to recommend a Byzantine AAR in the other thread :)

Just to clarify have you turned on the fantasy events in the start game menu?

Fantastic start Stormbringer.

There was a similar style on one of the stories on the Paradox AAR forums - the storyteller did half of his post a story (or in your case, letters) and the other half an overview of what had happened in-game. It was a good way to appeal to all :)

In addition, I think I'll apply for a generalship - and I'll also say that pictures can really make a story around here ;)

Nope!

Quick update so you don't think I forgot abou this.

As my troops were just returning home from our war the Ottomans attacked. They declared war on February 4th, but we have been prepairing for this, and so they did not catch us by surprise. Their armies were split about half and half between Turkey and Europe and I quickly moved my fleet into the Bosphoros, praying that it could withstand the Ottoman attacks.

The Ottoman European armies attacked Constantinopol, and we barely won the battle, but we lost most of our army. Now it was up to my fleet to determine if I would survive at all since the three thousand men I had left could not really do anything. My fleet won easily against the Ottomans and I could feel safe for now knowing that they cannot get to me from Turkey. I begun to quickly build up an army, taking loans as I needed them.

I raised taxes for war and with my new army moved into Macedonia, easily defeating Wallachia with my cavalry army. Ottomans in the meantime sieged Morea and after they captured the city they annexed my ally. This was probably for the better as it freed up me to join another alliance in the future. I captured Macedonia relatively easily since the Ottomans were building up a force in Turkey, but my navy once again defeated theirs and that huge force still cannot get to me.

In February of 1429 the Ghazi join the Ottoman Empire through an event, making the Ottomans even stronger. No problem for now though since my navy is relatively good. I attack into Bulgaria and begin sieging the region. It falls soon after.

On April of 1430 the Ottomans offer me a peace treaty, giving me Macedonia and Morea. I gladly accept and go home to leak my wounds and try to repay the loans that I took. But I am no longer a one province minor, and very proud to have come out of this war alive.

I will post pictures in the next update, ok?

As promised, this update will have pictures.

The start

We started in May of 1431 with a lot of rebuilding to do, and a lot of money to pay back to the banks that have loaned it to us for the war. We also had no allies now, and so a formation of an alliance became a priority.

A royal marriage was arranged between Hungary and Byzantium, but the gifts that our Emperor sent were not to the Hungarian taste, and relations were damaged because of them. In early 1432, however, a follow-up gift warmned the heart of the Hungarian King and eventually, due to our royal marriage, Byzantium entered the alliance of Hungary and Serbia.

We had to extend our loan in the summer of that year because we had no money to repay it. Slowly, however, we were saving more and more money in the hopes of repaying all of them sometime in the near future.

Meanwhile the Ottomans got themselves engaged into a massive war against Karaman, which they appeared to be losing. We could only hope that Karaman would do well and would weaken the Ottomans further, because a second conflict was imminent.

At the beginning of 1433 we reduced our army size. We could no longer maintain such a larger amy and inflation begun to eat into the profits of our kingdom. We could always raise the army back within a few months and I decided that the risk was worth the extra money.

In November we repayed our first loan, and had three more that we needed to pay in the future. It was nevertheless good to not have to pay interest on one of them.

In early 1434 we hired a good military advisor, who raised the quality of our army. It was expensive but quality is everything right now, and we cannot afford to pass up the opportunity to raise it. Late in the year we repaid another loan, leaving us pennyless, but I still think it is a first priority to repay all of the loans I had to take.

In December I considered declaring war against the Ottomans who were very weak and in a war against Karaman. Albania and Wallachia had both at least twenty thousand soldiers, and I decided against it, since there would be no way to protect myself against them.

The next few years went by quickly, and I concentrated on repaying our loans and preparing for the next war. By 1438 I had finished repaying all of the loans and had about 100 ducats in the treasury. Things were looking up. In July I decided that we were ready for another war.

By September of that year we won a decisive victory on the sea, again cutting Turkey off from Europe. Our first goal would be to neutralize Ottoman allies in Europe, and only then would we move on to Turkey itself.

In March of next year Austria annexed Wallachia after defeating them soundly. I am not sure how Austria expects to govern a region so far away, but if it revolts it would be all the better for me.

The Pope aproached us with a proposal of a Union of the Orthodox and the Catholic churches, but we rejected it outright. Two decades ago we might have taken the help, but right now we did not need it, as Hugary's huge armies arrived on the field.

We launched a massive attack on Albania by the end of that year, preparing to take control of the mountain province. A seperate attack was launched on Smyrna after Hungarian military took care of almost all Ottoman allies in Europe.

In early 1440 Morea was attacked by the Ottomans, but our army that was sieging Albania came down and defeated the small Ottoman army in Morea. We then returned and prepared to take control of Albania but that was not to be this time either.

Albania and Bosnia put together their last army, and launched an attack on Constantinopol. Our Albanian army had to be dispatched to deal with the invaders and took heavy casualties, but in the end we were victorious. At the same time Smyrna fell to our troops, and Konstantinos XI moved on to attack the Ottoman capital itself.

By the end of 1442 the war was over and the Ottoman capital had surrenderd. We demanded that the Ottomans had over two more of their provinces and they easily complied. Now the Byzantine Empire was strong in its own right, without even the foreign help, and most of the Ottoman allies were severely weakened.

Nobody was commenting, so I left the save game alone and left the AAR. I can continue if anyone is interrested in reading it.

As am I. I love reading AARs.

Nope!

How about after the updates you guys tell me what you want me to do next? That way everyone is engaged, and I know people are reading. Since you all are interrested I will restart it this week.

Excellent. I was planning to offer myself up for Balkan command or something to the west.

I'll also probably demand we rebuild the Roman Empire.

I think we should try to retake Turkey!

AGCEEP 1.5 just came out (a huge update over the 1.42 that I was using) that includes a lot of new events and fixes a few very annoying bugs. So I am going to update, but sadly cannot continue this game since the saves are not compatible. If anyone has any requests for a country to play my next AAR with, feel free.
