I was browsing this forum and a question come...

Just for actual or former-mods:

- Why do you became a mod?
- What are it's advantages (ego's included :) )?
- Do you want to continue that way? (TF is not listening... ;) )

And most importantly:

- Can you be a mod and have a normal life, with a job and friends, at the same time?

Just cuious...

(don't behave bad so TF won't close this one, OK?)

I was a mod over at Gamecatcher, but I t hink it's the same here:

1. I was a mod because I displayed qualities of judgement, self control and general intelligence.

2. The advantage is that you get certain priveleges and respect.

3. I can say that once your not a mod anymore things go alot more smoothly, and you get your soul back from the demon... ;)

4. Can you? Yeah, sure. Did I? Nope. :)

I'm not a mod, wouldn't want to be. I think I would lose my temper now and then with certain topics or people and thus, not make a fair mod. It is obvious to see it takes time and work, and seemingly little reward. Sorta like a dog catcher...

"Hey dad, how was work?"
"Son, a damn dog bit my A$$ today!"

I honestly see no advantages to being a mod except for two small things. One being that lovable BAN button. ('course, some mods just haven't located it yet thinks I) :sheep: :goodjob: The other being a special "Mods Only" forum, but that may not necessarily be a good thing... ;)

It's a dirty job, but somebody gotsta do it. And the people who do it are volunteers, and don't get the thanks they deserve. Just keep in mind, if it weren't for the mods here, this whole place would be an AOL chatroom. If you've never seen one, consider yourself lucky. :)

Their are several reasons:

1) You aren't ever bored!!(good and bad)

2) You get to give something back to CFC(generally only good)

3) BAN button...I'm only kidding ;)

4) You have an excuse to tell people you don't like instead of just blowing them off(frequently used :D)

2 is pretty much all I'd take seriously :)

- Why do you became a mod?

TF needed a new mod when PH retired..PH suggested me and I accepted.

- Do you want to continue that way? (TF is not listening... )

No plans on quitting yet;)

- Can you be a mod and have a normal life, with a job and friends, at the same time?

Yup.....in fact a lot of mods do! :D

Why do you became a mod?

Well, I was going to be the mod of the Demogame, then Duke picked the other two. ;) But, I'm a mod because I'm helping out with the tournament.

What are it's advantages (ego's included )?

The ability to make a thread VERY quiet... :D (mod actions, bannings, closing threads) eh em.. Well, you're able to help take care of the forums. It's also fun organizing stuff. (Although, some go all out organizing a forum... ;))

Do you want to continue that way? (TF is not listening...

Sure!

Can you be a mod and have a normal life, with a job and friends, at the same time?

yes.

Let's see, advantages....................?????????

Disadvantages: People complain no matter what you do, intense childishness form MANY people (this is so common one would think only 8 year olds post), lots of things.

Why do i do it?

Because I like helping people, and I sometimes get to do that, not a lot, but sometimes.

hehe.. I knew AoA would post something like that. :)

I've had a few complain - but not much.

I was a newsgroup and chat moderator for the MSN philosophy forums several years ago. That being said:

1) I started out lurking in some forums that were of interest to me, and eventually became a regular participant. I was reading about 6 different groups a day, some of which generated hundreds of usenet postings in the space of a few hours. My "modhood" started out innocently enough when I sent some informative emails to the Forum Manager about spam, or other postings which violated the MSN member agreement. We were more or less a self-policing community, but the FM decided that he could use an extra hand or two, and I ended up being one of the selectees based on my conduct, participation and understanding of the rules

2) Advantages - there are fewer than most people think. The proper perspective is not about the "power" that you supposedly possess, but the responsibility that you have to the Forum. When you are a moderator, you are elevated more visibly in the "spotlight", and your actions "speak" just as loudly as your words. You are a representative of the Forum "spirit", an enforcer of rules, a mediator of disputes, and a source of help. Often times, it is a thankless job, but the reward is in making a difference by participating in a community that you enjoy outside of being a moderator. Moderators that purposefully carry "egos" are rarely respected. Yet, moderators are human too. They have good and bad days just like everyone else, but they are held to a higher standard. The key is in remaining professional within the bounds of your responsibilities.

3) I gave up the "gavel" years ago when the original MSN forums disbanded. I have since had several offers to continue in other forums, but find that I cannot honestly devote the time that would be needed to peform such duties responsibly.

4) The short answer is "NO" (j/k). The more complicated answer is "Yes", but it takes work (and depending on the volume of traffic in your responsible areas, a VERY understanding mate);) When I was a MOD on MSN, I was working full time and going to college full-time with a double-major, and I was still reading and responding to 1000+ posts a day. Of course, back then, I really had no life.

Yes, it's all very suspcicous. I say it's only a matter of time before somebody suggests electing moderators again. :ack: :ack: :ack:

Now, the question that arises is: which CFC mod doesn't have a social life?:D
While I'm at it: AoA, I appreciate your job. Just wanted to mention it.

I became a moderator so that I could eat mor brains. BRAINSSSSS! I CAN SMELL YOUR SPICY BRAINSSSSS!

The question is:

There have been many threads on how to become a mod, but I fail to understand the objectives of that, as I don't see well why to apply to a place like that.

TF will surelly not ask me, but if he did I wouldn't accept. Why? Cause I'm in a very time consuming university/degree and it's a too big responsability to be a mod in a site with the CFC's size and reputation.

Take AoA example: mod of so many foruns with so many posts to control and with the most difficult posters to manage.
Or TF: he had to ensure all the site is going right and it runs eficiently. He have to manage the mods group, keep site available and working, update downloadables, implement new futures, adapt the site to new situations and new operating systems/browsers/programming languages... To me, it seems as impossible to do as to plan an Economy under communism. I'm very happy he exists, but I sure doesn't want to be in it's shoes.

Basically, I'm happy you all exist, but I don't understand you...

Chieldishness, right.
People always complain, no!

I was recently 3-day banned and I'm not unpleased with that as I understood why (bad day, as my girlfriend... it doesn't matter + Bush's comments + Bush's admirors protests).
So, I just accepted (and decided I'll start complaining myself when provoqued, as others do...) and I'm not mad about it.

Conclusion: Can someone explain to me why there is people who want so hard to be a mod? And that even ask how to become it in a thread?

Just to understand human nature ;)

Yeah - I can imagine that after keeping the brainless masses here under control, you'd need to get some tasty brains. Absence does after all, make the heart grow fonder. And the brains grow spicier apparently! :)

Understand apparently some people think it's some glorious high-profiled visible rank or mark of glory or high office but fail to understand the heavy responsibilities that come with it.... ;) In short.

For a fuller understanding, may need to take up a course on internet pyschology. ;) Or maybe they want to feed on brainy material.

I wouldn't mind being a mod of a smallish forum like sports talk but Off Topic would be waaaaaaaaaay too time consuming.

I wanted to help this new and small community grow. I had a suggestion for a Civ 2 Ladder/tournment and became MOD of it. Then I became super mod because I had no life and was here all the time. Luckly my job allowed me to surf and MOD all day. :)

Respect and power are the advantages. People assume you know what your talking about....and won't disrespect you as much.

I'd like to....but after I stepped down from the majority of my positions, (due to working two jobs, and going to school) I was forced out. But I continue on as a Moderator at GameCatcher.

You can....depends on how much time you put into MODing.
