So my order(s) of Civilization II and it's expansions just now arrived on my doorstep from Amazon, and early at that!
I haven't yet taken them out of their cases but I have been looking around for a guide to install them on Windows 7, as I've heard that the original discs do not play nicely with the modern systems.

Is there anything I should know about Civilization II beforehand, like features that don't work or moves that can seriously ruin you in the very early game? Suggestions for starting out and whatnot?
Thus far I've only ever played Civilization IV - and a few games of III that I've never completed - and a lot has changed since the CivII days. I'm essentially going back in time here and will be getting involved with mechanics I've never once experienced!

Hahaha niiiice! How did you buy it and how much was it?

The first thing you'll notice about Civ2 is that it has no workers yet. Settlers do those jobs. The next thing you'll see is that there is no culture. So you'll have to defend your borders with either units (you can't walk past enemy units), or you don't defend them at all.
Also, Civ2 doesn't have the luxuries and recourses system yet. So roads are roads that bring in money, they don't give trade routes as they do in Civ3.

TBH I play Civ1 mostly nowadays, and some Civ3 on occasion, but at the time I could play Civ2 for days straight. If I had to choose, I couldn't choose between 1, 2 or 3. I like them all equally as they are different games. 3 is most different from the first 2 though.
Civ2 might be the most addictive one.

In the early game, I'd say build a unit to scout the neighborhood (something with 2 movement if possible) and then build settlers and when in doubt, build even more settlers.
Also. find out what the buildings do (some effects are different than from Civ3).
Everything is a bit simpler and smaller than in Civ2, but that makes it more of a challenge in my opinion.

Oh and if anything - keep the CD in the machine and ask your advisors for help. :goodjob:

Don't go with the lowest difficulty level as it teaches you bad habits. Don't try to make all the wonders either - although you will always rue the day you missed out on Leonardo's Workshop!

I actually got them off Amazon, several said "Only one left in stock" though D:
I followed one of the links on this site - in the Info Center and whatnot on the side it'd have links to buy Civilization IV, Spore, Civiliation III and so on - I followed those and clicked a few Amazon recommondations until I found the ones I needed :)

Aah no workers and culture? Oh my, much has changed since CivII ^^
No luxuries either? wow!

*nods* There's some things like the dinosaurs and dragons from Fantastic Worlds I'd love to have seen in Civ IV, and the Right of Passage / Embassies of CivIII... But not many mods include such or are bundled with other things I don't much care for. Each game is different, brings different things to the table, and so having each to try out can be fun :)

Aaah, how would I go about getting this to run on Windows 7? I don't have the professional version so I don't have access to XP Mode. I had a link for getting the game to run, but now I've misplaced it ><

Search for "Tip and tricks for new players" in the strategy sub forum. It has lots of great info.
Look in the tech support sub forum for tips on how to install on windows 7.

*nods* Took a peek and read through their threads, and am now playing the base game just fine~ Still getting used to some things, and am swapping between the game and the Tips and Tricks thread. Has been pretty fun so far - Ghengis keeps suiciding units against a fortified archer of mine, and I've razed two of his cities that he's insisting on settling near my borders. Is a size 3 city I've been trying to take, but I keep simply walking past it

Ran into the "Can't occupy the same space without declaring war" problem for the first time too

Glad to hear it is working out. Once you feel comfortable, consider joining the ongoing Game Of The Month competition. It is the best way to learn the game real well.
