Just got the game and I am so confused

The game was on sale ($10 off) at Best Buy so I picked it up today.

How to I get a unit to land so I can build a settlement? I did the auto explore (unintentionally I think) and I am further up the coast and want to build a settlement. I can't seem to figure this out -- it doesn't seem to be similar to the original game and I didn't play Civ IV.


So, um......


I need help getting started I guess.


I got my game started fine, its landing and getting a settlement started is what I am having problems with.

There are several ways to land a unit. First take your ship off auto explore(click on the red circle with a line thru it) and then move it adjacent to the coast (using the arrow keys). You can then either attempt to move your ship onto land, which will automatically send all units ashore, or you can select a unit individually and move just that unit ashore.

Yes, don't auto-explore, or auto-anything for that matter. You need hands-on for learning, eh?
Otherwise it is fairly similar to the origional. Make colonies, populate them and build up an economy & army. Food, lumber & hammers, tools, guns, if you played the old one, this one should be pretty easy to get into.
