I haven't played Civ IV for about a year and I got an itch to play again. One thing I'm looking to do is play in the modern / future era more. I really would like to find a mod that lets me build mecha as part of my army. Also, naval battles are good too so any mods with more ships is welcomed.

Last but not least... if there are any suggestions on what patch I should patch with I'd appreciate it. Currently I am downloading 3.17... but I seem to remember Bhruic had a good unofficial patch. :goodjob:

Wolfschanze adds more naval units, and NextWar adds more Future Tech stuff.

My humble suggestion for modern era fun would be Varietas Delectat with the Modern Era Expansion pack. Five stars from me. :goodjob:

Also, a nice improvement in patches would be the latest version of BetterAI, which includes Solver/Dresden's latest unofficial patch. I'm not sure if Bhruic has done a patch for 3.17. If he has, I'm not aware of it.

Don't stay up too late. :)

Rhyes and Fall is my personal favorite of the Civ mods. BUG won't add anything to gameplay but will make micromanagement much easier.

My recommendation however would be Fall From Heaven 2. This is not so much a mod as a completely new game heavily based on civ. All the civs are really different. What works with one probably won't with another. Pretty much everything else is like that too.

Wolfshanze is awesome, but if you're going for it, get WolfRev instead. All the new units from Wolf, plus the revolutions, civ emergences and so on from RevDCM. Best mod out there IMO, except perhaps FFH, but as CCRunner said thats more of a complete new game than a mod.

So WolfRev if you want Civ4 with cool new stuff, FFH if you want something completely different.

Bhruic's patch is obsolete with 3.17, you want Solver's/Dresden's unofficial patch instead. There's a sticky on the BtS forum for it.

Where can I find this Modern Era Expansion pack? My searchfu returned a lot of nada. (It must be linked in someones signature or something because a lot of other mod threads were turning up in my search.

I'm having a system problem at the moment, but I'll look it up for you in the morning when I get it fixed.

Posted this in a similar thread in the BtS forum, it applies:

Fall from Heaven is the most popular by far. As was stated by IGN, the real competition for the warlords expansion pack was Fall From Heaven. This was not an overstatement. Though as stated Fall from Heaven is it's own game, in it's own right really.

For non game changing mods, BUG and Better AI are great. They leave the game the same, one just enhances the UI (BUG) and the other improves the AI (Better AI). Those two mods are essential in my opinion. Better AI is more of a bug fixer, sort of an unoficial patch; hell the firaxis people sometimes release info to those guys letting them know how to fix bugs that have shown up since the couple years of playtesting. As for BUG, well if you try it you wol't go back to the regular interface. Many modpacks include these two mods in them (I know mine does). In fact I don't know why anyone plays without these two mods, they should be the standard BtS game, played in MP, but alas it takes an official patch from Fireaxis to do this sort of thing.

As for your true mods, mods that change the game, it really depends on what you are looking for. I highly recommend my mod: WolfRevolution or one of the components it is built from: RevolutionCDM or the Wolfshanze mod. Though if you are more into a radical expansion with dozens of new units and large gameplay changes (or enhancements depending on your point of view) take a look at Rise of Mankind (itself built from RevolutionDCM--a great mod, I think it is the core of 3 popular modpacks). Another very popular mod is Thomas War, it's not a RevDCM merge like WolfRev or RoM, instead it is kind of an extension of the official Next War mod.

Actually probably the best advice for you is to look through the Modpacks subforum and read through the threads. One piece of advice though. Make sure the mod you decide to download is stable. There are quite a few mods that you basically can't finish a game with, because they are unstable and will hang or crash after you play them for a while (a very frustrating experience, this is the main reason I built WolfRev from RevDCM and Wolfshanze, they are stable).

Thanks for the kind words :)

phungus: I've been looking through the subforum and the one thing I see quite often is hundreds of new leaders and hundreds of new techs being added which really isn't my cup of tea. I think people go crazy with adding too much to a mod. I would love a mod that really focused on adding more modern warfare options to the game. It's really too bad that the game turns are hardcoded into the game. I'd really like if the modern era's turns could be doubled and leaving the rest of the game in tact.

Check out WolfRev ;)

Also lots of people like the 100s of new units and leaders, it's why I mentioned Rise of Mankind, that's a great mod for people into that sort of thing. For people who just want the eras flushed out and glaring gaps like the 16th century frigates upgrading directly to WW2 era destroyers, completely skipping over 200 years of naval warfare, then Wolfshanze, and by extension WolfRev (if you're interested in a couple new mechanics like Revolutions and Barbarian civs) is for you.

Are WolfRev compatible with BUG 3.6?

BUG is included, current version is 3.6. I've turned off custom assets with 1.3.x (this new version) so there should be no conflicts with other mods that install in the Custom assets folder like BUG anymore :)
