Kernel panic redux

The kernel panic problem on my dual 800 got better for a while, but now it's back worse than ever. The only recent change to my system was the installation of Office X. What's really puzzling is that the crashes are not associated with any particular action. I've had enough of them to be pretty sure of this. I suspect this means that the problem is related to some process that's always running. Of course. I can always crash the program from my diplomacy screen by clicking on a leader after just finishing dealing with another, but that doesn't cause a panic. Hey Brad, why is Civ III the ONLY program that ever causes kernel panics on my system?

I dunno - why are you the only person to ever get kernel panics with Civ3? ;)

Well, for one thing, I have a dual 800 which has been known to have this sort of problem with other software - check out the Apple discussion boards. But I think there's another reason. I haven't had any panics lately and I think it's because I have not been running Classic much since I upgraded to Office X. The last set of panics I had came after I used an old version of FileMaker Pro in Classic. I have a hunch that staying away from Classic or at least rebooting after using it may eliminate the KPs entirely. I can dream, can't I?

P.S. Still love the game. I'm currently running roughshod over the pitiful Europeans playing as the mighty Iroquois at the Regent level. :D

That is unusual - my main Mac is a DP/800 as well and I don't really get KPs. The only time I get one is when rudely unplugging a firewire drive or when I try to install my Voodoo5.

I have heard reports of classic causing KPs - something to do with the serial driver. I don't have a modem, so that may be why I never see them.
