Lack of Diplomacy options...or am I missing something?

I'm not liking the lack of options to ask a civ not to do something. In my game, so far, I've been asked not to put troops near a civ's borders (had one and he was inside my borders) and had Egypt pile up troops on my borders without an option for me to ask Cleo why her troops were there. Now India has a settler deep in to my territory and there is no way to ask him not to settle near me, yet the AI has freely asked me this in games.

Surely the option to demand/ask something of a civ should be an 'always on' option.

Not sure if the option is somehow hidden, but human should be able to ask "what's with the army brah" the same way A.I. asks human player when hes marching near their border..

I dunno. I'm not seeing it. Egypt has a large force of troops on my border and I have no option to ask them to withdraw.

That's the only option I can't seem to find. Otherwise you can ask all of the same things the A.I. can as far as I can tell; Stop spying, Don't settle near me, etc.

This is so annoying. Hate it when the game treats the human player differently.

Also can't figure out when the "denounce" and "discuss" options become available. Half the time they're not even there.

When denounced, rather than having only the reply option of saying "good bye," I want two reply options.

1. "Go fly a kite" to put fuel on the fire to provoke a war; or

2. "I'm sorry you feel that way" to avoid further provocations.

Lack of Diplomacy overall. Wish there was a peace talks feature to have more than 2 civs discussing. There should also be a penalty to AI that break promises i.e. not converting foreign populace.

Let's not get out of hand here. I don't want brand new options, I just want the options that Civ has had before. An option to discuss has always been available to me in Civ, and now it's not. The player should have all diplomacy options (those applicable to his or her tech level) available at all times, regardless of whether an AI civ is close to your lands or whether their settler is in your neighbourhood or on his way. If I see a settler moving towards land I intend to settle then I need to be able to say to that Civ that land is mine.

I wonder if perhaps I have experienced a bug. I intend to keep exploring this option.

I can't figure out how to ask the AI not to do anything, be it settle cities near me, convert my people, move troops etc. I'm fairly sure there should be an option in the diplomacy screen but I'm just not seeing it. Am I being dumb or do I need to 'unlock' it in-game somehow?

There is an option under "Discuss" in the leader screen but, it's only available after the civ does something. So, only after they settle near your cities, or after they convert one. Ask them to stop and they may says yes or no. Sometimes they'll break their promise and you'll get a notification about it, it looks like a scroll.

Yes, but it's so mix and match. In my current game I was told to remove my troops from Peter's borders whilst he had two warriors within my borders. I had the discuss option but all it had was 'don't settle near me'. I know I obviously had open borders, but why didn't I get the same option he used on me?

I just believe that all options should be available at all times. If a civ settles in a spot I was going for then that's fair game. I missed it and they got it, but if I was at least able to tell them to send their settler away I'd feel better. They might just do so to avoid a war.

I also just feel that something's wrong and that options are not showing. Maybe it is working as intended, but if it is it feels lacking. Otherwise a fantastic addition to the Civ repertoire.

If you're Friends with the AI, you won't be given ANY options other than making a regular deal with them. Very restrictive.

Yep, that option is missing. They need to add it alongside the existing "Don't settle so close" option.

Unfortunately, when an option is unavailable it disappears from the menu instead of being grayed out. So not only can't you do a thing, and you don't know why you can't do the thing, but may not even know that the thing exists at all.

At one point I wanted to use casus belli or at least denounce a civ in prepation for casus belli, but both disappeared from the menu. No idea why.

No way of bribing a Civ to go to war or ask a friend to come to your aid in battle? Damn, that really feels like an unfinished product.

You can "trade" "Declare war on X" for gold or agree to a joint war with another civ.

That was the same with CiV, and there is a good reason for it. Remember when a spy told you: "Gandhi is planning a surprise attack on you"? That was possible, because the AI's intentions were there in the system to be discovered. The human player's intentions however are not - so the game has to treat the human player differently. So they came up with the fairly ingenious (IMHO) mechanism of allowing the AI to just ask the player about his intentions and punish him for lying (or changing his mind).
Not knowing about spying in Civ VI I assume there is still some way to get at an AI's secret attack plans - so I guess that's why they kept the "What are you doing at my borders with 18 catapults?"-dialogue.

Really? Looked on a trade and Joint War showed up, but I didn't have it until now (and I'm basically at the end of the tech tree), but no option to pay them to declare war.

90% sure. There may be a diplomatic prerequisite for it. TBH, I don't have the game yet, but I've seen it before in let's plays. Also, only currently available options will show up, so it won't show if the AI in question is unwilling to go to war with that civ.

yeah there's civic cards and tech stuff that allow diplomatic options, most obvious being open borders.
